Southend United have taken on loan, Colchester United youngster Matthew Hearn, with a view to a permanent move, The 18-year-old winger, born in Barking, will play for the Shimpers' reserves on Wednesday against Cambridge United at Roots Hall in the Avon Combination League, kick-off 2.00pm, as Blues decide whether to take him on next year.

The midfielder was frustrated at the lack of reserve team opportunities at Layer Road and hopes he will be able to feature more often by dropping down a division. Hearn has been in Colchester's first-team squad once, travelling with the pros to Sheffield United in the Worthington Cup, but has yet to make his U's debut.

Hearn has been a regular part of the Colchester youth set-up this season, but felt his chances at Layer Road will be limited. Hearn has joined Blues in a 'work experience' loan arrangement, where he will play in the reserves and youth team during his time at Roots Hall. Should he impress, Blues will take him on for the third year of his scholarship.

Matt Hearn, a friend of Blues youth coach Ricky Duncan, played for the Blues youth side at Boots and Laces against Leyton Orient on Saturday and scored with a first half free-kick, unfortunately Blues lost 4-1 in the Football League Youth Alliance fixture.

Blues Under nineteen’s are in action today at Brentford, kick-off at Noon, in the Football League Youth Alliance League.
