Having recently been released by Championship side Reading, 35-year-old striker Shaun Goater has joined an ever-growing list of players that have turned down Southend this summer, claiming that he wants to remain in the Championship next season.

A disappointed Steve Tilson told the clubs official website "Shaun was someone we were looking at, but he wants to carry on playing in the Championship, which is a shame from our point of view, but it’s his decision and one we respect and understand."

Tilson, who has been linked with trying to sign wingers Danny Thomas and Mitchell Cole recently, explained how he believed that Goater would have scored some vital goals next season if he had signed for the Shrimpers. "He has a very good record and he would have done a good job for us I’m sure, but he doesn’t want to drop down to League One."

Goater joins Chris Greenacre and Lloyd Owusu as the high profile players that have turned the blues down this summer, but Steve Tilson is hoping that some positive news on the transfer front will come next week as he is currently in talks with a striker and a winger.

"All I will say is that they were playing in the Championship last season," said Tilson. "Discussions are on-going but I don’t want to make it public who we are after as that can alert other teams sometimes," the Shrimpers Player of the Millennium explained.

Well with Lawrie Dudfield, Jay Smith and Nicky Nicolau still discussing contracts with new club chairman Ron Martin, four new trialists trying to earn themselves a contract with the club, Steve Tilson on the lookout for free transfers and the six-figure striker still on the cards, surely something must be resolved sooner rather than later.
