Blues Board Agree To Pay The Taxman

Well, Uncle Ron said it would go to the wire!

The Shrimpers have been granted yet another stay of execution in the High Court after they promised to pay off their £2.135million tax debt by Friday.

It's still possible that Southend will be placed into administration and a winding-up order thrown in for good measure due to their debt to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

However, the case has now been adjourned after Mr Justice Warren was informed the club had offered to pay the full amount by the end of the week!

HMRC did not oppose an adjournment until next Monday, by then we'll know if the board have kept to their word.

The judge heard that last week HMRC originally presented a winding-up petition for a tax bill of £690,000, yet after it became clear that a far larger debt was owed, it changed it's position and presented an application to have the club put into administration and the immediate ten point penalty which would have followed.

If the money is paid in full, both sets of legal proceedings will be dismissed next Monday.

Chairman Ron Martin insists he has personally saved the club from administration on two previous occasions and where the money is going to come from this time is open to conjecture.

However, the early money is on a mixture of Ron's wallet and Sainsbury's coughing up some dosh. If that is the case the future may be Orange for Shrimper shopping from now on.

So not getting the champange out at the moment, we'll keep that on hold until Monday.

But the board might have just saved our bacon in the short term, more analysis on why we ever got in this mess can wait until later, for now it looks like the best possible news.

The Club Statement

Southend United have this morning appeared in the High Court in London regarding an administration order from HMRC.

Agreement has been reached to pay the oustanding debt by Friday. Matters have been adjourned by the court until Monday pending the debt being settled.
