Blues Announce Roots Hall Friendlies

Blues' David Morley in action during Colchester's last visit to Roots Hall in July 1999.
There is definately an all-Essex taste about United's trio of home friendlies with Southend playing host to Canvey Island and Colchester United whilst Gillingham, from Kent of course, also pay a visit.

It is unusual for a League side to host non-leaguers in a friendly so it will be the first time Canvey have visited for a pre-season match. The last time the sides met brought a 1-1 draw at Park Lane in July 2001, Tes Bramble scored United's goal whilst Steve Tilson netted a penalty for the home side.

Our north Essex rivals from Colchester were part of the Essex Courier Tournament which took place at Roots Hall in the summer of 1999, which also involved Watford and Peterborough United. It was the U's who won the Trophy after beating United 2-1 in the final, Scott Houghton scored Southend's goal.

Gillingham last came to Roots Hall in 2001 in a match that also finished in a 1-1 draw, with Daniel Webb the Shrimpers goalscorer.

A further friendly, away at Frome Town is also expected to be confirmed.
