Barrett: 'I'm quietly optimistic about my chances of playing Huddersfield'

It's been ten days now since Captain Adam picked up a knee ligament injury he suffered in the 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town.

However he's hopeful, and would we expect him to be anything else, he'll be leading the team out at Roots Hall on August 8.

The Blues skipper has no trouble standing when clutching the League Two play-off trophy four years ago

Adam told the official site: "I'm quietly optimistic about my chances of playing at the moment. In an ideal world I would still have a couple more weeks to recover because my knee is still a bit sore at times but I'm back running now which is good news. I will start twisting and turning soon and can hopefully have a few days of training ahead of Saturday so that I will be able to play."

The Shrimpers captain went on to give his views on the season to come and playing with the new loanee from Col U, Matt Heath: "It's going to be difficult because the league is extremely tough this year with some very big clubs and we only have a small squad. I don't want to put too much pressure on us at this stage but if we do have a bit of luck with injuries and suspensions then who knows what can happen. It would've been nice if the back four could have all played together during pre-season but that hasn't been possible. It's not ideal but we have to get on with it and I'm sure Matt and I can do well together."

'A bit of luck with injuries and suspensions'. Exactly what Southend didn't have last season and let's hope Adam is not rushed back to make up the numbers and we see history starting to repeat itself.
