Barrett: 'I still should have stopped the goal going in'

By westfield shrimper

Blues skipper Adam Barrett is not using the pitch as an excuse for the first goal in the Essex derby defeat on Monday evening.

Barrett: 'Worst pitch I've ever played on in a professional game'

It was horrible to watch for the Shrimpers faithful, at the ground or catching the game on TV, as the ball slowly crept over the line in the early minutes against Colchester Monday.

And club captain Adam Barrett fully accepts his part in the goal.

Captain Adam told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I hold my hands up to a mistake and I know I should have cleared it. Nobody is more annoyed or hurt than me at what happened and us losing the game and I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch any replays of the match. The pitch certainly didn't help and it's the worst I've ever played on in a professional game, but I'm not using that as an excuse for my mistake because I still should have stopped it going in."

However, Adam is determined to remain upbeat from yet another disappointing result on the road.

The Blues legend continued: "I thought we were the better team and there were some positive signs from us. We showed good spirit but we have to start putting away some of the chances we're creating. I'm still not too sure why my goal was disallowed as even the player who was marking me, Clive Platt, told me it wasn't a foul. But the decision pretty much summed up mine and the team's evening unfortunately."
