Barratt: 'I'm proud and privileged to wear the Southend shirt'

Shrimpers captain, defender, and all-round living legend made his position clear as Southend prepare to face fellow relegation strugglers Exeter City in the mother of all six-pointers, where even a win for either side will still see them remain in the bottom four.

Captain Adam told www.echo-news.co.uk: "The club's problems have been well documented and we find ourselves in a difficult situation, but we have to dig in, work our socks off and try to give everyone a lift. The players, staff and fans all need one and by hook or by crook we have to get a result which will hopefully help us turn the corner. There have been a lot of distractions this season and they don't help but I'm very passionate about this club. I'm proud and privileged to wear the shirt and, as a group of players, we will do everything we can to try and stay up."

Being a gentelman and a scolar Adam only had good words to say about the departed Paul Brush, who coached him as a lad at Leyton Orient and was one of the main reasons the Southend captain came to Roots Hall in the first place, along with his life long support of the club.

Adam continued: "We all had a lot of respect for him but his job became very difficult. He called us into a meeting to tell us the news and it wasn't nice. But on behalf of all the lads I would really like to wish him all the very best for the future and also say a big thank you for everything he did for us and the football club. The horrible side of football is that we must crack on and it's a massive match for us against Exeter."
