Barny: 'It was a definite penalty'

Lee Barnard is now 13-2 to be League One's top scorer at the end of the season after grabbing his 9th and 10th goals at Edgeley Park Saturday afternoon.

If he can keep injury free, I certainly wouldn't play him at MK Dons tomorrow, and reach 20 goals plus, and he's half way there already, the season could still end up on a positive note.

Lee spoke to Blues Player after the game: "It's been a fantastic start to the season for me and it's great to have got another couple of goals to help us win the game. I felt we deserved the three points too because we played well and, although it took a while to get the goals, we kept on going and got our rewards in the end."

It was the good Lord's penalty just before the hour mark that changed the course of the game and Lee had no doubt it as the right decision, something photos of the incident have now confirmed.

Though he did have the spot-kick he missed against Leeds three weeks ago still on his mind, Lee made sure he kept this one low and hard to the left of the home keeper.

Barny explained: "He pulled me back and it was a definite penalty. You never like to see anyone get sent off but he was the last man because I was clean through on goal and he had to go. I'm not going to lie to you, I did think about the one I missed and I was a bit nervous about taking it. I was still confident I was going to score but there was a long wait while their player went off and it was just nice to see it go in."

And you new it was going to be the Shrimpers day when Lee hit the bar in stoppage time but the ball returned straight to his feet to grab his, and the teams, second goal.

He continued: "The goalkeeper was still in front of me so I had to get something on the ball but I could see it was going to hit the bar so I carried on running. It could have bounced anywhere but thankfully it came to me and I was able to score because it would have been a bit embarrassing otherwise."
