Baldwin on being a Shrimper: 'Unfortunately, there was only one way it could go'

Baldwin: 'I just want to play football week in, week out'

After 17 league games for the Shrimpers and one goal, that late equaliser in his first game against Swindon back in January, centre half Pat Baldwin won over a large percentage of the Shrimpers faithful before his return to parent club Colchester United where he is still under contract.

However, the 27-year old is still not sure where he'll be applying his trade come August.

Baldwin spoke to www.echo-news.co.uk: "Who knows what could happen in football? I've had no concrete offers and I have two years left on my contract at Colchester. I just want to play football week in, week out."

Now the ex-head farmer Aidy Boothroyd has been sent to Coventry, he did not have Balders on his retained list for next season, a new boss may want him to stay, as Boothroyd decided with another former Shrimper loanee from ColU last season, Matt Heath, along with left back John White.

Bristol Rovers, who remain in League One and where Baldwin had an earlier spell on loan last term, might well show interest in him returning to the Memorial Stadium.

The London born defender certainly only has good words to say about his time at Roots Hall and seemed to be building up a good relationship with skipper Adam Barrett, though he couldn't help the Shrimpers stay in the third tier.

Pat continued: "I was disappointed not to keep Southend up but I knew the situation before I went there. I understood the trouble they were in and that has an effect on the players. Unfortunately, there was only one way it could go which was a real shame, because it's a fantastic club."
