Brown: Backs player

Brown: 'Everybody can see we are on a losing streak'

Lilywhites boss Phil Brown is never short of a few things to say after the game but even he must have struggled to speak to the media as his side lost again, this time to the their lower league opponents Southend United in Tuesday evening's FA Cup First Round replay at Roots Hall.

At first he said: 'It is not the lowest point I have felt as Preston manager but it is a low point and I will demand more from the players.'

Brown then continued to speak to www.pnefc.com: "I am angry, it seems like after every game I am talking about the same things. If people are not prepared to put their bodies on the line for Preston North End then that disappoints me. I am not talking about the squad collectively, I am talking about one or two individuals. We had several opportunities to score tonight but we didn't put our bodies on the line sufficiently."

Fair enough, but the former Hull manger wasn't finished yet, and had more to say about where he felt his team had let him and the brave 161 of the Preston faithful who had made the 500-mile round trip, still going up the M6 as I write!

Brown said: "Everyone can bemoan their luck infront of goal but when you go into the six yard box you have to go in there and be prepared to get a cut head. We don't seem to have that commitment to the badge and until we get that then we will be going nowhere. We need desire, commitment and determination, all the things a manager demands from his players. Everybody can see we are on a losing streak and people are looking over their shoulders and worrying about thier game."

While Brown is expecting some injured players to return for their next league match against local rivals Bury he had one more rallying cry to give.

He concluded: "It is now about individuals stepping up to the plate whenever you are called upon and some players don't realise what it means to be playing for Preston North End."
