The report, issued on Thursday, shows that the 72 football league clubs spending on agents fees, which was £11.1m between July 2007 and June 2008, had fallen to £8.8m in the same period for 2008/09.

19 football league teams did not make any payments during that period.

The Shrimpers though were involved in 13 transactions which placed the £78,820 in agents pockets.

Football League chairmen Lord Mahwhinney told the Football League website: "Given the current financial outlook, it is encouraging that clubs are being more circumspect in terms of their payments to agents. In fact, clubs only committed to pay an agent in 6% of the 3,700 player transactions that took place during the course of the season. This is the lowest figure recorded in the five seasons since the publication of agents' fees began."
