A long week for Shrimpers: Unpaid tax bills, transfer embargos, Walker back but Friend goes

If defeat a million miles away in windy Cumbria was not bad enough, we can't get anyone on loan anyway until we cough up the dosh.

Said dosh being a mere debt of £660,000 still owed to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs which means a winding up order in the High Court Wednesday, October 28th

Then there's the whole embarrassment about left back George Friend who Wolves had agreed we could keep over a week ago but sadly the Football League said we couldn't.

Paperwork being held up over F.A Cup clearance my ass!

An official club statement tells us;

'On Monday last week the club agreed to extend George Friend's loan with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The paperwork was then submitted to the Football League who subsequently advised that the newly-adopted rules (June) relating to HMRC prevented us from extending the loan until the HMRC position was sorted.

The Football League's reading of the new rules did not reflect that of the club's secretary who, having already agreed the position with Wolves, believed there was no reason to prevent an extension of the loan.

While the Football League wish to be helpful this was the first potential challenge to the new ruling — something Southend United Football Club did not wish to do. The club has a good working relationship with the Football League, which it wishes to maintain.

Once the club has settled its case with HMRC we will speak further with Wolves and while the original loan was only requested for one month George has performed well and the manager would now like to keep the player for at least a further month.'

So we await to see if Uncle Ron has anything in the wallet but the chance of points deductions and ground shares are coming back to haunt us this Halloween week.

Good news. Well the spirit of the players is good, they were unlucky on Saturday and just have to keep grabbing points where they can.

However, with so many players a booking away from a suspension and who knows when another injury will strike, this could change at any moment.

Good to see Granty has faith in the club's future and James Walker is back after his month with Hereford and two goals in seven appearances.

Not something I believed I would get too excited about but as long as he;s standing he'll be somewhere in the team against Gillingham Friday.

Tilly told the official site: "He genuinely wants to come back and fight for his
place. Hereford were keen to keep him and extend his loan but James wanted to come back and we are pleased to welcome him."

Who knows, this could be a turning point for James and the club, we can but hope.
