In The Hot Seat: Tranmere

Last updated : 23 November 2009 By Mike Jackson

How long have you been a supporter of Tranmere?

I've been a fan for 20 years since the age of 9.

John Barnes has gone, what were your thoughts when he was appointed and where did he go wrong?

It was an interesting appointment and because of the harsh sacking of his predecessor Ronnie Moore, the fans never gave him a chance even before the poor run of results that saw him sacked.

He wanted to play football in the right way (passing style) but in the end didn't have the players capable of doing this - players he brought in I must add after a large chunk of the squad left in the summer.

Who would you like as a replacement for manager?

By the time this goes public I imagine it will have all happened but right now I'd say Jimmy Harvey or David Kelly who are both past players. Anyone but Joe Royle of the ones available right now really.

(Since Mike answered these questions they've appointed as caretaker, Les Perry.)

What is sort of squad is left?

Although we have picked up three points in two matches since Barnes left, I still feel that the players we have are not good enough to pick up results consistently so I hope that come January the new Manager will get rid of some players and bring in a few new faces.

Which youngster will make the biggest impression in your team?

If he plays, defender/central midfielder Ash Taylor is our most promising youngster at the moment although Terry Gornell upfront may also go on to bigger and better things.

Are you happy with your chairman/backroom staff?

The Chairman is unpopular with the fans after the appointment of John Barnes but he has helped us out a lot in the past so can probably be forgiven if things work out OK this season.

Which team do you want to beat the most and why?

In League One I think it's probably Oldham these days.

The Leeds 'effect' has worn off after three seasons so Oldham and probably Huddersfield who signed our Captain in the summer would be the main two for me.

Favourite ever player and why?

For me, Johnny Morrissey our wing wizard from the late 80's and early 90's is my favourite player.

The days of him on one wing and Pat Nevin on the other and both feeding John Aldridge upfront were superb times, although there are a number of other players I could probably choose as well
.

Favourite away ground, if any, and why?

Although I haven't been to either with Tranmere, I really liked both Molineux (Wolves) and St James Park (Newcastle) but I would plump for Molineux just.

The atmosphere was great before and during the game and it was a really friendly stadium to visit.

Best ever Tranmere game seen and why?

The best game I've been to was the League Cup semi-final (2nd Leg) against Bolton in 2000 where we turned a 1-0 win in the away leg into a 4-0 aggreate win to book our place at Wembley where we lost to Leicester in the end.

I watched the FA Cup comeback from 3-0 down to beat Southampton 4-3 on TV as I was away in Uni at the time (I was gutted I missed being there).

Best place to have a pint before the game?

For away fans it has to be the Mersey Clipper right by the Car Park entrance at Prenton Park whereas home fans use the Clipper too but also the Prenton Park Pub on the corner near the Away turnstiles.

What's your thoughts on Southend; the team, the management, the ground?

I've been to Roots Hall twice and as we won the first time and went top of the League, I have good memories there on the whole.

A similar Club to us in the sense of competing with so many other teams around them from the London Premiership Teams to lower league neighbours such as Colchester and perhaps further out, Norwich, Ipswich etc.

I've always like Steve TIlson and his manner to be fair.

Predict your champions and runners-up, the four play-off teams and the four to go down.

Champions: Leeds United Runners-Up: Charlton

Relegated: Wycombe, Carlisle, Exeter and either Us or Yeovil.
