Despite plenty of chances at the Prostar Stadium, the teams went in goalless at half-time.
Shrewsbury looked dominant at the start of the second half, but the visitors grabbed a potentially vital goal nine minutes from time when Neil Ashton put the ball into his own net after a mix-up with the goalkeeper.
There were few real chances in the aftermath, meaning Bury take the advantage back to Gigg Lane.

It was a game of few chances at Spotland.
However, Rochdale keeper Frank Fielding had to be alert to prevent an own goal in the first half while, at the other end, William Buckley put the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside.
Ex-Blues keeper Simon Royce made a fine save for Gills towards the end, low down at his left hand post, to keep his side level.
