Screech speaks out again: 'I'll be kissing the badge & all that if I score against Southend United'

Any excuse to get this photo out of Screech

Well at least he's not calling anyone an idiot this time!

The Shrimpers faithful have been planning their trip to Lincoln City on Saturday, March 12th for a while now, those cheap train fares have been snapped up long ago.

For a while it was mere pilgrimage to our legendary former boss Steve Tilson, now applying his trade as the Imps manager, however the recent great run, the best in the division, has turned the game into a vital need for three points to continue the run into the play-off positions, in fact by then we're be hoping the team are actually in them!

Now maybe having a word or two with former striker Scott Spencer after his recent utterings just might be on the mind of a few.

It was always expected that Tilly would pinch one of his old players, and no surprise when it was Screech, it was either him or Matt Paterson who ended up at Stockport, and he duly offered Screech a contract until the end of the season at Sincil Bank after signing him in the new year.

It was soon after he made his infamous 'Sturrock is an idiot' quote, you can reread it all below if you must, and time hasn't exactly calmed him down, then again Screech was never the brightest spark in the room, telling www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk: "I was completely out of favour at Southend, what can you do?"

Keep quiet for a start, most of us believe that Scott, four goals in 12 games as a Shrimper, didn't get a fair crack of the whip under Blues boss Paul Sturrock, who isn't too badly at the moment, but he is losing any sympathy we might have had for him by the day!

Anyway, the former Everton boy, the Premierships side paid out £300k for his services from Oldham as a youth then never played him, did get a run-out in midweek after being used as a late substitute in most of his games so far, a chance for another dig.

Spencer continued: "That was my first 90 minutes of the season on Tuesday as I was not even allowed to play in the reserves at Southend, so I was happy to get some playing time under my belt."

There was a bit of a discipline problem in a training session with former assistant boss Tommy Widdrington but Screech keeps leaving that bit out.

For now, after finding himself the 'third' striker at Rochdale when Tilly gave him a chance on loan before snapping him up, it's all happening again at in-form Lincoln, Tilly saving them from possible relegation to the Conference, this time it's another on-loan striker Ashley Grimes and the Imps skipper Delroy Facey, the latter scoring for fun at the moment.

Maybe all these managers just saw something in you Screech that makes you a permanent back-up, but he explains the past himself.

Spencer said: "I have come here to get as fit as possible and hopefully I can try to show what I can do. But Ashley is playing brilliantly at the moment and so is big Delroy. There is nothing much I can do. I found myself in a similar situation when I went to Rochdale in August 2009. Le Fondre or O'Grady were scoring every week. The manager, Keith Hill, was great to me and played me in the reserves but I was not going anywhere. Then my agent got me a trial at Southend, I scored a few goals and managed to get a contract in that time."

So what went wrong at Roots Hall? We certainly needed all the players we could muster back in the summer. It just might have something to do with the right stuff that Luggy obviously sees in a player. Though Louie Soares would make some question the Scots judgement isn't always spot on!

Screech explained: "The new manager (Sturrock) came in and would start me in the pre-season games, then always take me off after an hour or so.He just decided that I was not for him. I don't know what I did wrong, that sometimes happens in football. So obviously I am grateful for Steve Tilson for taking an interest in me."

Fair enough, if that was it, but sadly Screech has to end on a note that will continue the efforts of the Blue Voice to find a suitable song for Scott when the day finally arrives.

Spencer concluded: "I really want to get out on the pitch that day and I will be kissing the badge and all that if I score. I am frustrated, not bitter and I still have a few friends at Southend, but there will be no friends when we play on March 12."
