Gills ex-Shrimper off to Cambridge

Bentley: Set to go out on loan
Mark Bentley: He could do a job, but not in the position we need to cover

There's many who believe one of Tilly's few mistakes was allowing midfielder come centre-back Mark Bentley to leave the Shrimpers after we won promotion to the Championship in May of 2006.

Off he went to the garden of England, well, Gillingham, and he's been there ever since.

However, at 33, his one-year contract coming to an end in the summer, and first team opportunities limited with the League Two play-off contenders, he wants to get in the shop window and show clubs there's life in the old dog yet.

So he's decided to jump ship and join Blue Square Premier side Cambridge United on a one-month loan agreement.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler told www.gillinghamfootballclub.com: "Mark told me he was frustrated in training because he just want to play and if the roles were reversed, and I was in that situation, I'd have done the same thing. He is a top lad and always gives everything he's got for this club but when it comes down to it he just wants to play football matches."

Good luck Mark who will go straight into the squad for the 17th-placed Conference side's game at Southport this weekend.

So the Shrimpers 'A' team joke is wearing a bit thin now, certainly we should be saying hi to ex-Captain Kevin Maher and centre-back Garry Richards, both of those have been starting for the in-form Kent side.

Cambridge United are being managed at the moment by Director of Football Jez George after another former Shrimper in Martin Ling was recently sacked.

And here's the words of Bnetley himself from late last month:
