Former Shrimpers look set to stay with Gills

Simon Royce, who along with Mark Bentley, looks likely to stay in Kent

There had been some chatter that of the several ex-Shrimpers released by League Two rivals to be Gillingham last month, two or three could do a job for their old club!

Well, it looks increasingly unlikely for a couple of them, as new Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler is on the verge of giving them a second chance.

With regular shot stopper Alan Julian needing some back-up, along with some day-to-day coaching, who better than Roycey to be offered a joint goalkeeper/coach role.

Simon has failed to play in the Gills first team since being involved in a car accident last December.

Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "We have a ready-made [coach] in Simon and he can still stand in for Alan Julian if there was a problem. I would like to have a goalkeeping coach but the finances dictate, but Simon has got a lot of experience, so that would be something that would interest me."

The Gills boss, in his second spell at the Kent-based club after joining from Dover when Mark Stimpson was sacked, will also be discussing with midfielder, and part time centre back, Mark Bentley, the possibility of a new contract.

Hessenthaler continued: "Mark was in and out of the side last year but in the latter part he came in and did really well and is the type of player the football club needs. He's wholehearted and a passionate lad so we will sit down, but it's down to finances really."

Expect a pay cut then Mark, a member of our League One champions squad.

Anyway, let's not be to down hearted, that still leads Gary Richards and James Walker.

As for Kevin Maher, it's highly unlikely Tilly would allow him through the gates at Roots Hall, let alone work with him as the new assistant manager.
