Dave McSweeney back at Billericay

Defender and part-time builder Dave McSweeney made his Shrimpers debut in October 2000 while still a trainee but was prone to injury and never really cemented his place in the side, where he played centre half, or even as an emergency left back.

Eventually, after 91 appearances for Southend, he was released at the end of the 2003/04 season and ended up at Billericay Town of the Ryman League Premier.

McSweeney made over 200 appearances for the Essex side when in June 2009, after five years, he signed for Grays Athletic in the Conference National, surprisingly rejoining Billericay shortly after on September 26th!

However, due to work commitments he called it a day at the backend of last season.

Once again the lure of the commuter town was too much with Dave deciding he wanted to give it another go, and the new Town and former Chelmsford manager Craig Edwards was more than happy to accept his offer, as he reshapes the Billericay squad for a promotion push next term after finishing 13th in 2009/10.

Edwards told www.billericaytownfc.co.uk: "I'm delighted to have Macca back. I phoned him after Steve gave me the job and he asked where I was. I replied, 'where you bloody should be, at Billericay!!' He is glad to be back and will be a big asset for us next season. He was my captain when I had him at Southend United as a youngster."
