Danny of the Rovers: 'Wakering has been in my life since I was 16'

Greaves: Had more hair when he played at Roots Hall

Former Shrimpers striker Great Wakering manager Danny Greaves is the new Great Wakering Rovers manager.

The son of Jimmy played nearly 50 league games for Southend scoring 14 goals, not a bad record but he always seemed a little lightweight for the lower leagues and suffered possibily for having such a famous Dad, he suffered many unfair comparisons.

Anyway, he's made a bold statement about aiming for promotion and that his taking over heralds a “new dawn”.

Blimey, good luck Danny, who is the club's tenth boss after Ryan Wilkinson left at the beginning of October following a 7-0 away defeat to Waltham Abbey.

Greaves will have ex-Tiptree striker Adam Flint as his assistant, while the club’s current coach Danny Heath stays on.

He told www.echo-news.co.uk: “Wakering has been in my life since I was 16, when I used to played against them in pre-season friendlies for Southend. It has always been in my life, and I’ve always felt it is a smashing club and a very well run club. I think success here would be promotion. I’m under no illusions that it will be easy, but ultimately we want to go up. Being realistic for this season, the main aim is to consolidate results and to build a team that people want to come and watch. But there are a lot of points still to play for and we want to finish as high as we possibly can."

And why not? Though looking at the league table he's given himself a tough task.

Moreover, Danny wants to make clear that anybody that has drifted away from the club in recent weeks should give the new regime a chance to turn the club around.

Greaves said: "What I would like to make clear is that anybody who has been associated with Wakering in the past are more than welcome to get in touch if they want to come back. And that is in terms of players or staff. There was nothing wrong with Iain O’Connell’s reign or Ryan Wilkinson’s reign, and they are both good friends of mine. But what I’m saying to players, staff and supporters is this is a new dawn and if people want to come back they will be welcomed with open arms.”

Since leaving his post at Witham Town Greaves has been scouting for Chelmsford City, and met the players at Burroughs Park last night before their friendly with Hullbridge Sports.

He will be in charge for the first time on Saturday when the Rovers take on Leiston away.
