Thornton: Booted from Northampton

Kevin Thornton

Midfielder Kevin Thornton has left Northampton after manager Gary Johnson decided not to offer the Irishman a new contract.

The Irishman was at Sixfields for 19 months, more recently on a month-to-month contract while he proved his fitness.

He made 24 starts and 21 substitute appearances for the League Two club, scoring nine goals.

Cobblers assistant boss David Lee said:"The gaffer spoke to Kevin Thornton the other day and he hasn't been offered a contract. Kevin did very well in pre-season but he then had to have an operation and since then he hasn't really got back to the same level that he was at then. We are quite well covered in midfield and I just think the gaffer felt that Kevin would be better off playing week-in, week-out in a first team somewhere else. If he stayed with us after August 31 that would have limited Kevin's options under the rules of the transfer window and so the decision was made now. We wish him well."

Harrad: Signs on

Shaun Harrad

Meanwhile, striker Shaun Harrad has joined League One outfit Bury for an undisclosed fee and on a three-year deal.

The Shakers received a six-figure fee from Sheffield Wednesday for crowd favourite Ryan Lowe and have quickly moved for Harrad.

The former Burton and Notts County forward joined Northampton for an undisclosed fee in January 2011.

He goes straight into Richie Barker's squad for Saturday's League One match at Sheffield United.

Westwood: Staying on

Ashley Westwood

It's not all the exit door though from the Sixfields Stadium as Ashley Westwood and Kelvin Langmead have extended their stays as Cobblers and will probably be seen at Roots Hall at the weekend.

Centre-half Westwood, 34, signed a short-term deal in August but will now stay until the end of the year after penning a contract until December 31.

His fellow central defender Langmead has had his loan deal from Peterborough extended until January 2.

The reasons for these ins and outs even though the two departing are very popular players with the Town are a case of needs must, as Blues boss Paul Sturrock would well understand, the books must be balanced!

Johnson: Lauds team form

Gary Johnson

Cobblers boss Gary Johnson told ntfc.co.uk: 'The decision to ley Shaun go was a combination of a playing decision and a wish to bring the budget back into line. Over the summer we added two major strikers to the squad, (in Akinfenwa and Robinson) players I feel will take us forward and that meant Shaun dropped down the pecking order. He was one of the top wage earners here, and it did not seem right to have a player who was not going to be a key man or a first choice.'
