Ex-Captain Adam: 'In terms of my career I had to leave'

There's a more upbeat mood around the message boards today, and let's face it it wouldn't take a lot, the new management team saying the right things, the belief the debts are going to be cleared, my God there's even rumours we might be about to sign someone, once the transfer embargo is dropped so we could play them that is.

And then ex-Captain Adam comes along and spoils the party mood!

He might be a living legend to the Shrimpers faithful but having confirmed his signing with Championship club Crystal Palace Adam Barrett was going to make sure we all knew why he walked out on his former club last week.

Adam told www.cpfc.co.uk: 'I had two years left on my deal at Southend, but unfortunately due to the problems that the club are going through at the moment it was best, in terms of my career I had to leave. It has been a torrid time down there so I handed in my 14 days notice as financially they could not afford to pay wages, which in turn allowed me to join Palace on a free."

As suggested before, this transfer had former players Dougie Freedman and Dean Austin's fingerprints all over it and Adam said little to deny it.

He continued: "I worked with Dougie when he was at Southend and I was Captain at the time he came in, I have also worked with Dean Austin which is good for me as I know a few faces already and as soon as he knew I was available contact was made."

Adam concluded with how he wants to 'be around winners' and he's 'hungry for success', 'this is a great club with a great history' ect.

Nothing we didn't know of course but such a shame that the club felt it had to go down the route that lead to a great servant to Southend United FC having to leave in such a manner.

Still think everything's hunky dory with Ron at the helm? Another date in the high court coming soon!
