All Hail Prince Harry; It's back to the Hall for Chairboys and Grecians but not Seals

Last updated : 04 May 2009 By Shrimpers24

TLG continues to see which teams will be visiting Roots Hall next season and it's a southern trio, well Exeter is nearer Southend than Bury, I think, that's confirmed before next week's play-off semi-finals.

Meanwhile, it was celebrations for two Spurs old boys as Spud Taylor, also an ex-Blue player and boss of course, and Steve Perryman, both gaining promotion with their clubs Wycombe and Exeter.

Brentford 2 Luton 0

Champions Brentford ended their League Two campaign on a high as two late goals put already relegated Luton to the sword.

Dean Brill did superbly to keep The Bees at bay early on pulling off fantastic saves to deny Billy Clarke and Sam Wood's stinging volley.

Substitute Karleigh Osborne finally broke the deadlock on 73 minutes when he headed in Glenn Poole's freekick.

Another sub Moses Ademola helped set up the second in injury time when his ball released David Hunt who picked out Adam Newton for a well-worked goal.

Rotherham 0 Exeter City 1

Exeter secured back-to-back promotions as Richard Logan grabbed the winner against ten-man Rotherham.

The Millers had the better of the first half and Reuben Reid should have hit the target from close range while at the other end Dean Moxey drew a final save out of Andy Warrington.

Exeter took the lead in the 71st minute when Rob Edwards whipped in a cross from the left wing and Logan rose highest to head home.

They should have wrapped up the win when Dale Tonge was shown a straight red card for his foul on Craig McAllister but Stuart Fleetwood's penalty was saved by Warrington.

Wycombe Wanderers 1 Notts County 2

John Thompson bagged a superb double for Notts County, but that was not enough to stop Wycombe securing promotion to League One.

The Chairboys made most of the running early on but it was Notts County who took the lead on the half-hour mark when Thompson's long-range effort took Jamie Young by surprise.

Wycombe did eventually draw level six minutes after the break when Tommy Doherty and Gary Holt combined to set up David McCracken for a simple finish.

Despite having nothing to play for The Magpies stunned Adams Park for a second time when Thompson curled in from 20 yards but it didn't prevent Peter Taylor's side going up with ex-Blue loanee Lee Sawyer starting in mid-field before being substituted in the 82nd minute.

More former Shrimpers played with Harry himself, striker Matty Harrold, coming on as a 71st minute substitute, and right back Lewis Hunt, who played the whole game.

Bury 1 Accrington Stanley 0

Only goal difference denied Bury an automatic promotion place despite Phil Jevons' penalty sinking Accrington Stanley.

Glynn Hurst should have put The Shakers in front in the first half but sent his effort just wide of the post while Andy Bishop's backheel trickled just past the post.

Accrington should have taken the lead when Wayne Brown brought down Craig Lindfield in the area only for skipper Peter Cavanagh to fire his penalty against the bar on 56 minutes.

Bury missed a glut of chances but did finally break the deadlock when Andrew Procter handled on the line and Jevons rammed home the resulting spotkick.

Rochdale 0 Gillingham 1

Curtis Weston grabbed the only of the goal of the game for Gillingham who will face Rochdale again in the play-off semi-finals.

Gills boss Mark Stimson opted to rest several of his star players but made the brighter start and Nicky Southall's effort was ruled out for offside.

They did go in front on 20 minutes when Weston finished off a storming run with a brilliant finish past Rochdale keeper Frank Fielding.

The Kent side rode their luck late on as Alan Julian brilliantly saved Simon Ramsden's volley but they held on to secure the home second leg and perhaps a psychological advantage.

The clean sheet was helped by ex-Blues in the shape of club captain Mark Bentley, now playing as a central defender, and Garry Richards, a central defender now playing left-back.

Keeper Simon Royce was one of the players Stimpson decided to rest.

Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Shrewsbury Town 2

Shrewsbury dramatically leapfrogged Dagenham into the final place-off spot as leading scorer Grant Holt made one and scored one.

Holt headed the visitors in front when he nodded Chris Humphrey's cross past Tony Roberts on 19 minutes for his 28th goal of the season.

The 28-year-old returned the flavour when he flicked on a long ball for Humphrey to coolly lob Roberts to leave The Daggers on the ropes just after the half-hour mark.

Paul Benson grabbed a lifeline for the home side when he nodded in Matt Ritchie's cross after the break but they could not find a crucial second as Shrewsbury prepare to face Bury on Thursday.

Chesterfield 0 Bradford City 2

Rangers loanee Dean Furman netted the only goal as Bradford executed the perfect smash and grab raid against Chesterfield.

The Bantams went into the clash at Saltergate having thumped Rotherham last time out but nearly fell behind early on when striker Scott Boden saw his close-range header skimmed the post.

Drew Talbot followed former Sheffield United front-man Blade's lead in the 30th minute with the goal at his mercy before Furman dealt them the killer blow nine minutes after the restart.

Former Mansfield striker Michael Boulding settled any Bradford nerves with two minutes left moments after Gregor Robertson came close for Chesterfield.

Morecambe 0 Bournemouth 4

Bournemouth ended a remarkable season on a high after demolishing Sammy McIlroy's Morecambe at Christie Park.

The Cherries - who started the season on minus 17 points - stormed out of the blocks and took the lead in the seventh minute thanks to Portsmouth loanee Joel Ward's powerful header.

Midfielder Liam Feeney's rasping drive saw Bournemouth double their advantage in the 36th minute before he set up Brett Pitman seven minutes later in a destructive opening half.

Striker Pitman picked up where he left off after the restart and put the final nail in Morecambe's in the 69th minute after smart work from Crystal Palace loanee Rhoys Wiggins.

Chester City 1 Darlington 2

Darlington striker Pawel Abbott's late second half double confirmed Chester's relegation to Non-League football next season at The Deva Stadium.

Chester needed a win and a minor miracle to beat the drop but were given cause for concern when Jason Kennedy twice tested home keeper James Spencer early on.

The Seals came close through winger Ryan Lowe and David Mannix but failed to stop Abbott opening the scoring from six yards in the 71st minute.

Chester thought they had done enough to at least grab a point when Ian Miller headed into his own net in the 88th minute but Abbott's strike three minutes into stoppage time summed up the host's season.

Lincoln City 0 Aldershot 2

Aldershot striker John Grant netted the only goal as The Shots ended a run of nine games without a win on the last day of the season against Lincoln.

Grant did the damage for the visitors in the 26th minutes combining with winger Louis Soares before firing past Imps keeper Robert Burch for his first goal in seven games.

Lincoln threw men forward in search of an equaliser after the break but it came at a price with Scott Davies sealing the deal for The Shots in the 88th minute.

Barnet 1 Port Vale 2

Port Vale duo Louis Dodds and Danny Glover's first half goals ensured boss Dean Glover ended his reign with The Valiants with a win against Barnet.

Glover confirmed he would leave Port Vale after their final game of the season against The Bees which got off to a perfect start when Dodds lashed home in the 11th minute.

Things soon got better for Glover on the stroke of half-time when Arsenal loanee Abu Ogogo was given a straight red for deliberate hand ball in the box.

Glover's son Danny saw his spot-kick saved by Ran Kadoch but pounced on the rebound before The Valiants were given a late scare when Barnet midfielder Danny Hart found the net in the dying seconds.

Grimsby Town 0 Macclesfield Town 0

Grimsby live to fight another day in League Two but will need to improve in order to avoid a repeat next season following a dull draw against Macclesfield at Blundell Park.

Mariners keeper Wayne Henderson was called into action as early as the fourth minute when Macclesfield's Gareth Evans found himself in space but failed to convert.

Grimsby never looked like testing Henderson's opposite number Jon Brain but nearly stole all three points in the last ten minutes through Millwall loanee Adrain Forbes.

The midfielder twice tested Brain inside 30 seconds put couldn't find the net as it ended all square.

Play-Off Fixtures

Is it The Dales time at last. They have played in the Football League's bottom division since 1974, the longest time any team has been in the fourth tier of the League, with some even derisively renaming it 'the Rochdale Division!'
