LDV Vans Trophy Semi-Final - 2nd leg

Brentford 2-1 Southend United

(Ingimarsson 13, Owusu 78)

(Brentford won 4-2 on aggregate)

Ingimarsson hooked the ball home from a free-kick after only 13 minutes to put The Bees 3-1 up on aggregate.

But former Bees manager David Webb, given a rough reception by the crowd, saw his side give themselves hope when Damon Searle levelled on the night with a free-kick which deflected in off David Theobald.

Shortly after half-time Bees keeper Olafur Gottskalksson went off injured after denying Rob Newman, leaving reserve keeper Paul Smith to be one of the night's heroes.

He made a flying save from Scott Forbes and blocked another effort with his legs before Brentford went up the other end and Owusu fired in Paul Gibbs' pass to end Southend's resistance.

Darren Powell was sent off for a second booking but it did not spoil Brentford's night.

That Lloyd Owusu goal 12 minutes from time sealed the West London club's place at the Millennium Stadium, where the Bees lost to Port Vale 2-1 after taking a third minute lead!

For Shrimpers, they had to wait for Tilly and 2004 before they finally got to Cardiff, the first of three visits in just over a year.

The first two in the same competition they lost 2-0 to Blackpool and Wrexham, before they were third time lucky and got their own 2-0 win against Lincoln City and promotion in the League Two play-off Final in May 2005.
