The faithful were finally rewarded: Cardiff 2005 - Lincoln City 0 Southend United 2

Lincoln City 0 Southend United 2 (after extra-time)

Whereas over 18,000 have made the exodus from southeast Essex to south Wales in the past, this time only a third of those LDV Vans Trophy followers were in attendance, but it made little difference as goals from leading scorer Freddy Eastwood - with his 24th of the season - and Duncan Jupp secured Blues' spot in next season's Coca-Cola League One.

Indeed, United had gone 315 minutes before former Grays Athletic frontman Eastwood netted Southend's first-ever goal at the Millennium Stadium, and instead of Lincoln City, appearing in their third consecutive play-off campaign, making it third time lucky, it was Steve Tilson's men who prevailed after two failed attempts, albeit against higher division opposition in Blackpool and Wrexham in the LDV Vans Trophy.

In the process, the Seasiders became the inaugural winners of the League Two Play-Off trophy, almost an exact copy of the championship-winning prize for the same division. They were also the 83rd team to compete in the end-of-season game of Russian Roulette, and like Wycombe Wanderers (who remain the only side to hold a 100% play-off record) in 1994, Southend went through the final three games unbeaten.

...and the celebrations begin
Tilson made just a solitary change to the starting line-up, recalling striker Wayne Gray in place of the unfortunate Lawrie Dudfield. Mark Bentley's wrist injury, noticeable for the heavy strapping on his left arm, was deemed inconsequential enough for him to start, whilst there was not even enough space on the substitutes' bench for fit-again Tesfaye Bramble.

Red Imps coach Keith Alexander retained an unchanged side from the outfit that drew 1-1 at Macclesfield Town to secure a 2-1 semi-final victory over the Silkmen. The man who had stated after the clash at Sincil Bank in August that Southend would not be "there or thereabouts" come May prevailed with his well-organised 5-3-2 formation.

In sunny, if desperately windy, conditions in Cardiff, the early stages saw the Lincolnshire side carve open the better chances. Only three minutes were on the clock when Gareth McAuley's long throw into the penalty area was nodded wide of the right-hand post by Francis Green. At the other end, good work on the left from first Nicky Nicolau and then Che Wilson culminated in the latter crossing for Carl Pettefer at the back post, with Paul Morgan having to make a good block to stop the midfielder from netting.

Duncan Jupp notches the second
City enjoyed the greater possession, but Blues appeared threatening on the break, and a fine Pettefer pass to Jupp saw the right full-back deliver a pinpoint centre that Jamie McCombe courageously cleared inside his own six-yard box. Nicolau then drove wide from twenty yards when well-placed to look for support.

As the half-hour mark approached, Southend were almost punished for their inability to retain possession. A Simon Yeo effort was ruled out for offside, although subsequent television replays suggest that the 23-goal hit man may have beaten the trap. Then Richard Butcher's long thrown caused Darryl Flahavan to panic and he punched the ball onto McCombe's head. Mark Bentley saved the day with a full-length stretch to hook off of the line with Green ready to pounce.

Freddy Eastwood put Kevin Maher under pressure, and the club captain, who flew out quickly after the celebrations to be with his brother, Martyn, who was married in Limerick, Eire, allowed Yeo to steal away. He raced to the other end, but when Gary Taylor-Fletcher was set-up, he smacked his effort straight at Yeo, who was struck in the face. A succession of flicked headers then allowed the diminutive forward to set-up Butcher, who acrobatically sent the ball flying over Flahavan's crossbar.

If the first period did little for SKY Sports' viewing figures, both teams then proceeded to make the second a much more entertaining match-up. Five minutes after the interval, Green timid 30-yard effort was the first shot on goal by either side. A minute later, Eastwood shanked a shot from similar range well wide for a goal-kick, and then Maher assisted Gray with a beautifully slighted 40-yard pass that was laid off for Eastwood, who hit McCombe with his shot.

Bentley, who picked up his fourteenth caution of the season and therefore narrowly avoided missing the first three matches of 2005/6 as well as appearing before a Football Association disciplinary commission, shot wide to the right from twenty yards, and then when the former Aveley midfielder and Nicky Nicolau were both denied by last-ditch challenges on the edge of the penalty area, Eastwood skewed wide to the left.

Kevin Sandwith's reverse pass then brought about Lincoln's best effort on goal of the afternoon. Yeo was the recipient, but his stinging ten-yard shot from the left was wonderfully parried by Flahavan at his near post. Pettefer moped up, and soon afterwards Eastwood was able to tee Bentley up to calmly drift a right-footed curling attempt straight into Alan Marriott's gloves.

A Flahavan error could have proved costly midway through the second half. Sandwith's right-wing corner was swung underneath the Shrimpers' crossbar, and the goalkeeper flapped at the ball. It fell to beanpole Ben Futcher, and he dribbled around Flahavan before setting up Green, whose weak shot was cleared off of the goal-line by Wilson.

Another Sandwith flag-kick caused mayhem as McAuley was left to nod unmarked at the custodian, and after Maher's fantastic low cross was just touched off of the boot of Mark Bentley by Futcher, it was the defender's lob that was met by a Green bicycle kick. Flahavan brilliantly palmed off of the head of Yeo.

Southend's goalscoring heroes with the trophy
Eastwood again shot wide after Jupp had set him free, and Butcher gave a reminder of his ability with a fierce right foot as he blasted inches wide of the left-hand angle. But it was Blues who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the closing stages as Bentley was blatantly shoved over in the penalty area. West Riding FA official Mark Atkinson failed to award a spot-kick, but a lack of a card for Bentley underlined his sympathy.

End of normal time: Lincoln City 0 Southend United 0

From then on, Steve Tilson's troops, suitably rallied by the gaffer at the break, were on top against a tiring Lincoln side as they sent waves and waves of attacks forward in extra time. Seven minutes in, Eastwood had a dubious claim for a spot-kick turned away as he hit a fierce shot at McCombe's right arm from point-blank range.

Another attempt from the ex-West Ham United trainee smashed into Bentley but fell for Nicolau, although the man-of-the-match in the previous clash directed his fifteen-yard shot wide of the left-hand upright. Substitute Lawrie Dudfield, who had replaced Gray with eight minutes of normal time remaining, then crossed for Bentley to whack wide. Pettefer's hard work on the right was also unrewarded as he Nicolau fired wide.

The goal was coming, and it finally arrived during stoppage time in the first period of extra time. Nicolau alternated with Maher all afternoon, but it was the left-footer's cross that was met by Spencer Prior. The lumbering centre-half headed goalbound, but Matthew Bloomer, another replacement, was on hand to divert away. Thankfully, Southend's sharp-shooting striker was on hand to convert from close range. (1-0)

Half-time in extra time: Lincoln City 0 Southend United 1

There was only one chance in the whole of a tense extra time, but it was all Blues needed to extend their advantage to two and make sure that the Play-Off trophy was heading Essex-bound. Eastwood battled hard with Morgan on the halfway line, and he was able to outpace the Red Imps defence. Dudfield made a decoy run and Marriott had to commit, so Eastwood was able to spread the play to Jupp on the overlap. The Scottish Under-21 international slipped the ball underneath Marriott and into the bottom left-hand corner to cement the triumph and net his first professional goal for ten years. (2-0)

Full-time after extra time: Lincoln City 0 Southend United 2

The last two times Southend have travelled to the Millennium Stadium, it has finished in a 2-0 defeat, but this time the scoreline was reversed. It was a first League win over Lincoln in seven attempts, but the bare statistics say nothing. Southend United will play Nottingham Forest next season, and also local sides Colchester United, Brentford and Gillingham. No wonder the faces of those 6,500 supporters at the end of the game oozed delirium. League One here we come!

Referee: Mark Atkinson (West Riding FA) 6 out of 10 (3/5 General Control, 1/3 Application of the Laws of the game, 2/2 Appearance and Personality) - gave a number of needless free-kicks to Southend whilst ruling out the most important one of Bentley's penalty claims - Yeo's 'goal' has subsequently proven to be 'onside' according to TV replays, but Blues may have defended it better.

Marks out of Ten by Matt Donohue

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals Conceded: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Another clean sheet for Flahavan who will look back on the season with one mighty grin on his face. Starting the year as number two Flahavan has twice had to regain his place in the starting line up after injuries to Bart Griemink. However nobody can take it away from Darryl that he was the goalkeeper that saw Southend to promotion and three clean sheets in each of the playoff matches the Shrimpers were involved in. However it was not without a few nervy moments that Flahavan completed the Playoff Final. On a number of occasions, when Lincoln's aerial attack was in full force, Flahavan attempted to collect the balls into the area but instead flapped at the ball. Flahavan had to thank his defenders for saving his skin on a number of occasions.

RB Duncan Jupp | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 9.5

Southend are one goal to the good and defending for their lives. The balls brakes for Freddy Eastwood he surges away, and Duncan Jupp arrives in support. The majority of the Shrimper's support all point towards Jupp and urge Eastwood to square the ball. Eastwood does the honours, and the rest his history.

What a moment!
Who put the ball in the Lincoln net? Juppy Juppy

Duncan Jupp wrote his name into Southend United history by slotting the past Alan Marriott and securing the Shrimpers' promotion. It was Juppy's first goal since he left Fulham in 1996 and it was defiantly the most important he has scored in his career. Jupp's overall game was outstanding as he done everything right and gave the ball away on next to no occasions. For all the criticism that Jupp has received at Roots Hall, notably from those who sit in the West Stand, the former Wimbledon man has emerged as the hero. Well done Juppy!

CB Spencer Prior | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0| Rating: 8.5

Another solid performance from Prior who enjoys another playoff promotion after enjoying the success with Cardiff City in 2002. Prior played with the energy of a teenage trainee but with the experience of the veteran defender that he is. Spinner kept the dangerous Simon Yeo and the substituted on Derek Asamoah quiet. Asamoah who has now faced Southend on four occasions this season has posed less and less of a threat each time and it is credit to Prior that Asamoah managed to cause the largest problem when Spinner was injured. In addition Prior offered a threat from set pieces where he ironically worried the gigantic Lincoln team. In fact it was Prior who won the flick that found it's way to Eastwood for the first Southend goal.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8.5

One would say that it was a Barrettesque performance. Solid, simple but brilliantly effective and that is the story of Barrett's season. It was another clean sheet and another game where Barrett comes out with one hell of a lot of credit.

LB Che Wilson | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

Wilson was again as good a left back as another other in the division. Solid as a rock, not much gets past Che Wilson these days although he may be found wanting next year as League One possesses some very nippy wingers. However playoff success is about celebrating and we should certainly celebrate Che's success this season rather than worrying what may happen in the future.

RM Carl Pettefer | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 9

It looks like I ought to start eating them words! Pettefer, not a winger? Not on this performance! It was a day when I thought I was looking at a winger worthy of a place in a team progressing to League One not a central midfielder running around trying to put a few meaningless crosses in. Pettefer and Jupp worked wonders today and it came as no surprise that the corner for the first Southend goal was won on the right hand side. On the whole Pettefer's control and passing was immaculate as everything that he done was pinpoint. Petts tackling was aggressive but superbly timed as he played his last of 58 games Southend. 100% appearance this year; Well played Petts.

CM Mark Bentley | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

As one of the tallest players for Southend it was always going to be a very physical afternoon against the beanpole Lincoln side. Personally I felt that Bentley won as many aerial challenges that it is physically possible to although Steve Tilson's men kept the ball on the floor very well. As Bentley celebrated the win and the promotion there is one thing that will mar his long term celebration. Due to fifteen yellow cards, the last of which was picked up against Lincoln, Beno will now miss the first three games of Southend's League One campaign.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 9.5

League One here we come
Maher picks up the Trophy
Motm: It was such a hard decision for me to give a Man of the Match award today with so many contenders out there. However I plumbed for the committed Kevin Maher who proved that he really is Southend through and through with this fantastic display. Described by Che Wilson in the matchday programme as 'part of the furniture' Maher really has been a great servant for the club in the eight years he has been at Roots Hall. However it was at the Millennium Stadium that Maher's finest hour has come. Lifting the inaugural Coca Cola League Two Playoff Trophy was a site to behold and I am sure it is a picture that will live long in the memories of all the Shrimpers that where there.

Captain Fantastic
Captain Fantastic on the scoreboard as the game ends
However it was Maher's overall performance that persuaded me to award him with the TLG Man of the Match award. Captain Fantastic was absolutely everywhere as he made endless numbers of tackles and popped up in areas you just would not have thought he would have been in. As for ball distribution, Maher was at the very top of his game as he managed to turn the ball out wide on a number of occasions in order to build Southend attacks. The scoreboard certainly made for some very pleasant watching at the end of the game.

LM Nicky Nicolau | Minutes on pitch: 120 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Nicolau certainly has stamped his place on the team since starting in the semi final of the Playoffs and continued his good form into the final, even if it was not Nicky's best game. However the former Arsenal man, will not be too bothered as he has had to endure a number of games on the sideline this year.

Although Nicolau had delivered a few poor set pieces this did not deter him as he communicated well with Prior just before the first goal. Whatever the conversation is irrelevant, because it worked. Prior made a great run to the near post where the ball was placed perfectly onto his head from Nicky's great ball. It was a great set piece that of course lead to Eastwood smashing into the back of the net and ended an up and down season for Nicolau.

CF Freddy Eastwood | Minutes on pitch: 119 | Gls: 1 | Assists: 1| Rating: 8.5

Freddy celebrates at the end
A trophy, medal and Powerade Man of the Match award to show for the day!
One goal and one assist for Eastwood and I would argue that the former West Ham man did not even have one of his best games. There were quite a few misplaced passes from Freddy and he was guilty of trying a little too hard sometimes but who am I to moan. Twenty four goals since exploding onto the scene against Swansea City in the middle of October and an array of superb assists capped off by the ball slide to Duncan Jupp for the second goal. What has annoyed me about Eastwood throughout is that I do not believe he is performing to his full potential. There are so many occasions where he makes the wrong pass or goes down to easily. However this has got to be a positive as Eastwood has so much more to offer against better defenders next time in League One.

CF Wayne Gray | Minutes on pitch: 82 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Not by any means Gray's best game as he struggled against the physical Lincoln defence. Despite not being helped by referee Atkinson, Gray did not manage to get away or run at the opposition and proved easy pickings for the back three of the Imps. However Gray does not deserve the stick he has come in for over recent weeks and a lot of people seem to forget that the former Wimbledon man has had a lot of good games this season. I look forward to seeing Gray's pace frighten defences in League One next term.
