Spud goes on holiday to start Blues revival at Oldham

Tuesday March 7 1995 - Division One; Oldham Athletic 0 Southend United 2:

Steve Tilson

I know that face, but obviously Spud didn't rate him!

Steve Thompson, Danny Greaves and Theo Foley had been given charge of team affairs as Peter Taylor had been sent 'on holiday'.

Simon Royce was preferred to Sansome in goal, Keith Dublin was pushed up front and Gary Jones brought back into the side. Steve Tilson was given only his 5th start of the season, Ronnie Whelan was back and Liverpool loan signing Steve Harkness dropped.

It was an incredibly muddy pitch which made for a bitty game, but after a couple of good saves by Royce and a couple of misses from Oldham, the ball was lopped upfield and stuck in the mud instead of running through to the keeper. Jones who had only scored two goals all season before this was first to the ball and hit it into the net.

That was the turning point in Blues season, they gained in confidence, Dublin made a nuisance of himself upfront and disrupted the Oldham defence and it was no real surprise when Thomson scored the second.

The confidence they gained from this win set up a fabulous end to the season, but I still look back and wonder how different things would have been if Oldham had scored early on or that ball had not stuck in the mud and fooled the keeper.

Last 12 games after and including the Oldham win:
P12 W8 D2 L2 F 22 A10 PTS. 26
