Spinner will hope to improve on Dicky's Day

Spencer Prior has Derby County coming to Roots Hall for his benefit but it wasn't always attractive opposition for this type of game. In 1932 after seven years loyal service Dickie Donovan was awarded a reserve game as his benefit:

DONOVAN'S BENEFIT

"Dicky" Donoven has been allowed the reserve match against Leicester City on April 23rd, for his benefit and I trust that all supporters will co-operate in making it a bumper one. No player has deserved a benefit more than Donoven who for seven years has been one of the most consistent and hardworking members of the first team. Many may be unable to attend the match because the date will clash with other sporting occasions including the F.A. Cup final but supporters can do their bit in showing their appreciation of Donoven by purchasing tickets, sending along donations or subscribing to collections.

From the Southend Standard 7th April 1932

It seemed a bit rough to have a reserve game played on Cup Final day and although there was no TV available the match was on the radio, nevertheless the Supporters Club did their best with whist draves etc to boost the Fund.

DONOVAN'S BENEFIT MATCH NEXT SATURDAY

The game at the Kursaal on Saturday between the Junior Blues and Leicester City is set aside for Donovan's benefit and it is to be hoped for a bumper crowd will be present. Tickets are priced at 6d 1s and 2s. (2,5p, 5p and 10p). The 1s tickets admit to the wing stands, the west stand and the pavilion, and the 2s tickets to the "C" and "D" stands.

From the Southend Standard 21st April 1932

On the day the attendance was very disappointing in a game which Leicester won 4-3 but in collections they also raised £3 16 2d (£3.81) thanks to the band and £3 19 3d (£3.86) from the Supporters Club and someone personally donated a cheque for two guineas (£2.10).

Spinners Benefit v Derby County

Both the East Stand and the North Bank will be open Tuesday evening with the match kicking-off at 19.45. Admission is £10 for adults, seniors and students, and £2 for children. Both teams are bringing down first team squads, including Robbie Savage for Derby, and Spinner will play a half for both teams.
