Southend United's first visit to Lincoln City

In the First Round of the Cup in 1950 Southend had been suprisingly put out by Swindon Town so two weeks later on the day of the second round Southend had a spare weekend so a hastily arranged friendly was played at Lincoln.

Saturday 9th December 1950
LINCOLN CITY 4 - 4 SOUTHEND UNITED

United will remember their first visit to Lincoln for a friendly match, for Albert Wakefield rediscovered his goalscoring form of last season and notched all four goals, whether having struck this form, he maintains it remains to be seen.

The attendance at Lincoln was kept down to under 4,000 because of fear of fog. City won the toss and opened with promising football but found Scannell in impressive form, he saved three shots from close range but was beaten by the fourth, but Blues equalised just before half time with a vigorous ground shot.

On the resumption Wakefield was not to be denied crashing in a first timer from 18 yards and then when the Lincoln left back handled in the area, our Albert completed his hat-trick crashing in a hard shot from the penalty spot.

There was still plenty of fight left in Lincoln and when Scannell slipped they scored their second. From the kick off McAlinden passed to French whose ground pass went to Wakefield who scored his and Southend's fourth without a Lincoln player touching the ball.

Lincoln urged on by their supporters scored two late goals from goalmouth scrambles, the last in the final minute of the game.

Team: Scannell; Pritchard & J. Kilworth; French, Stirling & Woods; Butler, McAlinden, Wakefield, Davies & Gray.
