Southend United V Millwall - 1/2/82

Southend United entertained Millwall on Tuesday 1st February 1982 in a Football League Division 3 match, the first match to be played under Roots Hall's new floodlights.

The Shrimpers were managed by Dave Smith.

The Lion's players managed by Peter Anderson and could count on Sam Allardyce among their ranks, (a £95,000 signing from Sunderland.)

Southend had, (soon to be Charlton Athletic legend), Garry Nelson and Jimmy Greave's son Danny amongst their team.

Southend were 3rd in Divsion Three with Millwall occupying a mid table position....Wimbledon were bottom of the table at the time having only won 4 times.

The front cover as you can see from the picture has a rather strange photo of a player kicking a ball by a trophy in an empty stadium.

In the supporters club news section the club report of 12 new members from behind the 'Iron Curtain', a group of Czechoslovakian people having signed up.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw with Southend's goals coming from Keith Mercer and Tony Hadley.

Attendance - 5,676.

Sadly, the final Division 3 table didn't produce the promotion hinted at in the new year as we finished ten points behind third place Fulham.
