Its All Bullocks & Cider

SEASON 1989-90

Hereford United 0-3 Southend United

Saturday 14th October 1989

Promotion to the Third Division and our two wins against Hereford were important victories, the away game was in October.

As we went into this game we were top of the League. Starting a match in top spot is a wonderful feeling that can't be bettered, well it could I suppose if you were to win your next away game say 3-0 and that's what we did.

Train via Birmingham yet again, train through the Malvern Hills via the pleasant town of Malvern. We even went for a drink (a rarity in these days) in the Hereford Club.

The ground is strange place.

We were housed in a covered end which curved away from the pitch, (to our right was a sort of double decker stand, but with no lower tier), a very small stand, we had a small area of seats next to our end for away fans.

We had good noisy support, wonderful match and result, the sort of trip that dreams are made of. Two goals from David Crown and a third from "Super" Roy McDonough.

As we made our way back to the station, we heard a lot of commotion behind us, it was a healthy amount of Train Shrimpers, no-one could keep them quiet after such a game.

P.S. Less than 3,000 there, shame it wasn't more.

P. P.S. Their programme was 'All Bullocks and Cider'!

It was a wonderful start, but of course this couldn't be maintained by the time we played the return fixture on the 20th March we had dropped to third, (top three automatically promoted, next four in the play offs). It was a Tuesday night and goals from Ian Benjamin and David Martin gave us a 2-0 win but the crowd was only 2,669.

After a slight blip losing at Maidstone United 0-3 we recorded famous wins at Col Ewe, (remember the song: Col Ewe are going out the League), and, to gain promotion on the last day, Peterborough.
