PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 6 - 0 SOUTHEND UNITED

Division 3(South) Match No. 41

It was the last but one game of the season for Southend and up to this time no other side had managed to beat us home and away and the only side that could do that was Plymouth, who were top of the league one point above Swansea and this was the Devon sides last match, Swansea in second still had two games left.

Plymouth's previous match had been at home to Swansea which had finished 1-1 and set up this grandstand finish. Prior to this match Swansea had the better goal difference, but after Argyle had thumped the sorry Shrimpers 6-0, they now had the better average. They had done all they could and just had to wait and see.

On the Thursday Swansea were at home to Reading and nervously edged out a 1-0 victory. Two days later their last match was to Exeter, also at home, and they again won, this time 2-1.

The win won the championship for Swansea, had they drawn the Championship would have gone to Plymouth courtesy of their superior goal difference caused by the six goals scored against Southend.

It was the fourth successive year that Plymouth had finished second (once on goal average) but in these harsh times only the Champions were promoted, second place won you nothing but sympathy.
Southend stayed tenth place in the League.
