A Dismal Season: Southend and Carlisle 1934/35

Last updated : 21 October 2009 By Dad of Dave the Shrimper
For Southend it was a season that had started with such optimism with a new ground, (the Stadium), a new manager, (ex-England international Mr. David Jack), but the team just didn't work.

Mr Jack tried to install his former club (Arsenal) methods into operation but with lesser skilled players than the Arsenal the results were poor.

Yet they still had a record 10-1 win against Golders Green in the Cup, a 5-1 win at Wimbledon and league wins of 6-0 against Bristol City, 5-1 Bristol Rovers, 6-1 Reading and 5-0 at Newport.

Southend can count themselves lucky to have finished bottom but one as Newport were eleventh at Christmas but then went on a horrendous run which saw 2 wins 2 draws and 19 defeats to claim the bottom spot.

Carlisle also had a dismal second half of the season they went bottom on the 26th January and stayed there to the end of the season. They won only 1 drew 4 and lost 14 in the latter part of their season.

However neither side had anything to worry about in being re-elected as there were no serious contenders to challange them and both sides lived to fight another day.
