Uncle Ron may be unhappy with Auntie Beeb

In this world of a thousand fan sites, and that's just for Southend, everyone is thinking how to get that extra hit and a catchy headline is certainly one, transfer news, any transfer news it seems, is certainly another.

We plead guilty here at TLG that at times in the past we've leaned towards a transfer story to grab attention, and it all starts again the day after the Cheltenham game, but we've always tried to have a reasonable amount of fact behind the story mixed with informing the reader how much official confirmation is there and where the source is from.

Nobody gets it 100% right.

And though nobody is accusing the BBC of making anything up, the facts are in the quotes, selective as they are, the way both stories are posted, especially the latter, is to give the casual reader a nudge in the direction that these players are unhappy and looking to leave or at worst are very much available.

They have to 92 clubs to cover and Southend are not the only club that have had to put up with this sort of lazy reporting on their site, however, they got the quotes by the management of the club telling it how it is, being truthful with their supporters and look what it got them.

Both Tilly and Uncle Ron might be a little selective next time out.

First, Thursday and the Tilly/Robinson story. A young man scoring in a winning side is bound to attract attention, especially when he's on loan, but does "Robinson has done well for us and we'll wait and see what happens," said the Shrimpers boss, deserve the headline 'Southend striker's future unclear.'

Most Blues websites were concentrating on how pleased we were that he's happy here and contemplating how he might stay, but we can't sign him anyway until after the close season and he'd be daft not to see what was on offer then, including the small fact he's got two years left on his contract with his club Watford.

From Ron Matin's blog this week about the loan situation.

We all recognise that the team's fortunes have improved since Theo Robinson and Dorian Dervite joined us in January. I have no doubt that Steve Tilson (and also I for that matter) would be interested in signing both players. Rarely are these situations discussed in detail before the season ends for the players' agents would always wish to keep the options open.

However, what I can say is that if Theo and Dorian are interested in joining Southend that would be excellent news and I am sure the Club would do its best to sign them on a permanent basis IF Watford and Spurs were interested in selling and IF satisfactory terms could be agreed.

In Dorian Dervite's case he is a French under 21 international and whilst he has only recently recovered from a knee injury (cruciate ligament) he has done remarkably well during the time he has been with us but in doing so also no doubt has put himself in the shop window. That is a risk we always run but nevertheless I can confirm that since January our interest in both players has also been enhanced.

Everything seems covered correctly and in no way reflects badly on the chairmen and the club but not obviously good enough to be quoted by the Beeb in it's attempt to sensationlise a non-story.

Second this morning's, and far worse, was the Clarke story, so old the History channel could use it in peak-time, that made 'Clarke snubs talks over new deal' just plain laughable.

Yes, they were using Uncle Ron's blog answer to a question which he only wrote three days ago, though that's an eternity in cyberspace, but wrote; "We wish to extend his contract before the new season starts," Martin wrote on his official blog. "We would also offer him a new contract, but he has not - to date - wished to engage in those discussions," added the Roots Hall chief.

Read the whole quote: "I have answered questions on Peter Clarke previously and more particularly a couple of weeks ago in an Evening Echo article. (In May of 2008 TLG wrote that he was not going to sign a new contract, I'm sure Clarkey felt then a higher division club would come in for him.) I agree that Peter has been excellent in recent months - in fact his commitment has been first class throughout the season. Peter is a really good professional but here again, he and his agent have wished to keep their options open and although we wished to extend his contract before the season starts, and would also offer him a new contract, he has not to date wished to engage in those discussions. I guess we will find out what his future holds over the next month or two when Peter himself decides."

They'll get even less hits amongst lower division supporters with this type of rubbish posting and should find an editor who gives his staff rules and responsibilities to work by.

Finally, and all Shrimpers would want both Dervite and Robinson to stay, here's Blues boss Steve Tilson again with a real quote from the Echo on the loan player situation.

"You just don't know what players are going to be here next year. We obviously want the likes of Theo Robinson and Dorian Dervite who are with us on loan at the moment to still be here but it's been too early to talk to their clubs. We will just have to see who stays and then go from there again but that's still a long way off."
