Ride the Grey Horse: Pub Crawl in Accrington

Accrington Town Hall; doesn't serve real ale as far as we know

Now, I've never been to Accrington so possibily not the best person to recommend decent drinking dens before the game, but then again until last April we hadn't played them at their place for half a century so there's not a long line of Shrimpers who actually have, so it's me who is going to step up to the plate.

I've even been let down by my drinking buddies at the Ciderspace site who also haven't had the pleasure to visit the Lancashire town, so I'm thankful to my other old friends at
www.footballgroundguide.comwho have pointed me in the right direction.

As far as we know the club bar is no longer accepting away fans, bad luck if the coaches are late!

The Grey Horse Hotel; 263 Whalley Rd, BB5 5AD.

We could have called this 'Pub Crawl in Whalley Road' as you start here and work your way up to the Crown and the Stadium!

Five minute walk away so no excuses.

Thwaites Nutty Black pumpclip by Paul Kayley for Thwaites

Thwaites Nutty Black; harder and bigger than that fizzy Aussie stuff pictured above

Small but perfectly formed public house with Thwaites beer on offer such as Bomber and Nutty Black.

Greyhound Inn

The Greyhound Inn; Whalley Road, BB5 5ES.

A Sam Smith house, always a good pint.

Fair selection of organic beers and ciders, cheap & cheerful food, and a friendly landlady, what more do you want, and now working your way up to the ground!

The Crown; Whalley Rd, BB5 5DQ.

Main recommendation of being just behind the ground and would make it a hat-trick of Whalley Road pubs!

Welcomes away fans; has some Accrington Stanley memorabilia on display, including scarves and pennants left by visiting supporters, so feel free to add to their collection!

Friendly pub but no real ales on handpump, however you can leave quite late and still make the kick-off!

They have their own website here: http://thecrownaccrington.co.uk/

Peel Park Hotel

The Peel Park Hotel; Turkey Street, BB5 6EW.

If you get in a touch early, so not for the coach Shrimpers who can use one, or all, of the Whalley Road 'three', this place is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and serves up some decent food as well.

Go along Whalley Road (A680) towards the town centre. Before reaching the town centre turn left onto the B6237 Queens Road (if you miss this turning proceed into the town centre and turn left onto the A679 Burnley Road).

Continue along Queens Road into Penn House Lane. At the end of this road you will reach a T-junction with the A679 Burnley Road. Turn left onto the Burnley Road and then go almost immediately right into Alice Street. The Peel Park is down on the right in Turkey Street.

(Thanks to www.footballgroundguide.com for the directions, and the map is below as ever.)

Station: bottom right, the blue blob; Stadium: Top right, above Livingstone Road; Grey Horse Hotel: Top right, opp. Orange Street; Greyhound Inn: Top right, opp.Livingstone Road; The Crown: Top right, off Livingstone Road. (Er, not far to walk to visit all three pubs and the ground, nice!)

The Peel Park Hotel; Turkey Street, keep walking along Queens Road West, (see map above and directions further up), fourth street, right square, below Alice Street.
