Go to Greenwich: Pub Crawl in Charlton

Last updated : 04 December 2009 By exiledessexboy
As it's 13 years since my last pint in Charlton things may have changed, or maybe not, but I'll be looking to keeping on the Jubilee Line, which is running from West Hampstead on Saturday, and heading for Greenwich.

Charlton itself is actually quite a small place, and most of the club's support is drawn from the surrounding neighbourhoods in the Borough of Greenwich and other nearby boroughs.

The pubs in Charlton tend to be heaving on matchdays. This is nothing to do with their quality, which is mainly average to poor, but because the number struggles to get above single figures and isn't really adequate for a football crowd.

Alcohol is served at the away end, but I'm told not at half-time.

There are a number of fish and chip shops and a kebab shop on the way from the station to the stadium, and a MacDonalds next to Asda in Busby's Way. For those wanting a punt there's a Ladbrokes virtually outside the railway station.

However, for those going straight to Charlton Station, or arriving by coach, or just can't be bothered and actually like the fizzy stuff, here's a choice of pubs close to the ground.

According to some local opinion the best burger stall at the ground is the one outside the club shop.

(Thanks to www.ciderspace.co.uk and www.footballgroundguide.com for their help with getting this information together.)

The Liberal Club Bar:

There is the Charlton Liberal Club, to which away fans are welcome on payment of an entry fee, which was a pound. This is more spacious, less busy, has a large screen television and families are welcome.

The club can be found by turning right out of Charlton station and walking 300 yards up the hill on the left hand side of the road, past the row of shops.

It's a five minute walk from the away end, but it becomes a home supporters only venue after the game.

Antigallican

The Antigallican
; 428 Woolwich Road.

The pub most frequented by visiting fans. This is mostly because it's a hundred yards from the railway station, and a couple of hundred from the stadium, then again the old bill tend to push away supporters in its direction anyway. They then decide there's no spilling out onto the pavement even when it becomes packed!

Turn left out of the station into Charlton Church Lane and the Antigallican pub is down on the right hand corner.

Food is limited, however there's Sky Sports on a big screen and three flat-screen televisions, a pool table, darts, a jukebox and a couple of games machines.

Rose of Denmark

The Rose of Denmark; 296, Woolwich Road.

The pub not only allows in away supporters but absolutely welcomes them. They have a photo display on the wall of fans from visiting clubs that have frequented the pub this season and it also has Sky television, a pool table and a car park!

It may even have a decent pint of Courage Best if lucky.

Continue down to the t-junction with the Woolwich Road, passing the Antigallican, and turn left you will reach the pub further down on the left.

Please note that this is a home supporters only pub after the game.

The Pickwick; 246, Woolwich Road.

About a 10 minutes walk away from the ground. It has a good mix of away and home fans, with a friendly atmosphere (with the usual banter!).

T
here is a huge beer garden where kids are allowed to play football and it has Sky television with a huge projector screen at one end. It has a pool table, games machines and there is a handy chippie right next door.

Anchor and Hope

The Anchor and Hope
; 2 Riverside Walk.

Down on the Thames Path with views of the river front, in New Charlton a little over half a mile from the stadium. Popular with workers on the industrial estate.

On three levels: a general bar; a restaurant; a 'traditional style English pub' with baked potato menu. No real ale, but the beer is cheap, (for the area), as are the good large food portions. Friendly landlord, landlady and staff.

The Antigallican; turn left out of the station, top of Charlton Church Lane.

Rose of Denmark; left station, left Woolwich Road, halfway down bottom left square.

The Pickwick; Further down from the Rose, above Dupree Road, bottom left.

Anchor and Hope; Believe it or not, go to the top of the street named Anchor and Hope, before the jetty, in the top left square.

Go to Greenwich

Greenwich Station is three stops away from Charlton on the overland in Zone 3.

Do not expect to cut costs in this part of town, but you will get plenty of quality.

Cutty Sark Tavern

Cutty Sark Tavern; 4-7, Ballast Quay.

Large riverside pub with views of The 02 and Canary Wharf that, despite its name, is tucked away off the tourist trail enough to be tolerable.

Regular beers are the likes of St Austell Tribute, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Adnams Broadside, Fuller's London Pride and Greene King Abbot. Does substantial meals daytime and evening.

Spanish Galleon

Spanish Galleon
; 48, Greenwich Church Street.

A Shepherd & Neame pub, quite a few in the area, with Masterbrew, Spitfire, and Bishop's Finger. There are two bars joined by a food counter doing bar style food, with full restaurant style meal upstairs, both lunchtime and evenings.

Right outside Cutty Sark DLR, so near to Gtreenwich or Maze Hill stations. Child & Disabled Friendly.

Greenwich Union

Greenwich Union
; 56, Royal Hill.

The only pub outlet of Meantime Brewing, it concentrates on its own products - the only mainstream brewery item in sight was a beer from Adnams - and specialises in brewing continental style lagers and beers, with seven on draught and four in bottles.

There's a contemporary style menu served lunchtime and evening.

Richard I

Richard I
; 52, Royal Hill.

Also known as 'Tolly's', above average hostelry that's in the Good Beer Guide. A traditional bare board two bar outlet with Youngs beers and, since their merger with Charles Wells, Bombardier. Has a fair sized beer garden at the back.

Cutty Sark Tavern; Off Pelton Road, just into top middle square.

Spanish Galleon;
Right next to Cutty Stark DLR station, middle left.

Greenwich Union & Richard I; Next door to each other down Royal Hill, bottom left.

Greenwich Station, just in picture bottom left, 3 stops from Charlton.

Maze Hill station
, middle right, 2 stops from Charlton.
