Southend United's youth team further enhanced their credentials against Academy opposition with a 1-1 draw at Norwich City's Colney training ground.
Fresh from Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Reading at Boots & Laces, Ricky Duncan took a youthful Shrimpers side to Norfolk, with Ronnie Jones and Ricky Byrne out injured and Stuart O'Keefe called into the first-team squad for the friendly at Wycombe Wanderers. The second half saw nine changes, leaving Nathan McDonald, the goalkeeper, as the only second-year scholar to complete 90 minutes.
Blues were bolstered by the presence once again of Richie Foran, and it was the Irishman who opened the scoring after just four minutes. The former Carlisle United front-runner, appearing on the left-hand side of midfield, prodded in Duran Reynolds' inswinging free-kick to capitalise on a static Canaries defence.
Unfortunately, on the half-hour mark, the Canaries equalised. United were sloppy, with Tashan Adeyinka failing to claim possession in midfield before Blues allowed a fine right-wing cross to be nodded low into the bottom left-hand corner.
