After a heavy defeat to QPR the previous week, it meant that the Blues had to impress to boost their goal difference, but despite a positive first half performance, the sending off of Callum Whittikar ultimately put pay to their chance of winning.

The Southend goal came when Harry Crawford darted in front of his marker to score from a free quick to equalise after Millwall had taken an early lead.

The Lions took a second half lead from a penalty which saw Whittikar being sent off, and then taking advantage of the 10 man Blues by scoring two more.

Head of Youth Ricky Duncan told the official site: "We came into half time really confident, as we played some good football and we were getting on top. We then started the second half brightly before a moment of madness not clearing our lines in the penalty area cost us. Every season, this is one competition we seem to struggle in. We could have qualified if we had been a little cleverer in our decision making, which is disappointing, but we are back to playing in the league at home to Aldershot on Saturday and hopefully, we can pick it up from there.
