The Football League Awards

Southend United received the award at a gala dinner at The Brewery, London, on Sunday evening in front of guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

The club were up for two awards, only one of nine that had that honour, Dagenham and Redbridge leading the way with three, and though they missed out on the marketing prize can be proud of once again being named the Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year.

The Shrimpers have produced a broad range of activities for their community over the past year with more than 30 different schemes and projects.

During 2009 more than 40,000 people took part in the various initiatives delivered by the trust, covering all ages.

Greg Clarke, Chairman of the Football League, told www.football-league.co.uk: "The Football League Awards 2011 has given us the chance to recognise and reward the achievements of those on and off the pitch. The evening has been another huge success, and I congratulate all the winners."

Shrimpers Community Trust chief executive Steve Goodsell and community officer Ben Duncan, who both picked up the prize at the gala ceremony were obviously overjoyed.

Goodsell told www.echo-news.co.uk: "We shared the award with Watford last year, so to win it outright is an outstanding achievement. We believe our scheme is one of the best in the country and we must pay tribute to Sarah Potts, our health and welfare officer for her hard work in making this happen. The fans and local community really identify with what we do."

A Football League spokesman added: "We were particularly impressed by the scope and impact shown by the work Southend United do in health with their Blues Bodycare project, which was described as truly outstanding."

Shrimpers supporter Hannah Beard was one of three nominees in npower Fan of the Year category, but the award went to Coventry City fan Kevin Monks.

The Player of the Year Award went to Adel Taraabt of Queens Park Rangers; the League One winner was Craig Mackail-Smith of Peterborough United while Ryan Lowe of Bury was the player who picked up the prize in our own League Two.
