Wembley double book, Blues double strike

Last updated : 25 February 2009 By Shrimpers24

Wembley Stadium is at the centre of a potential compensation claim from The Football League after it double-booked the play-off finals and the Champions League final for the same date in May 2011.

Uefa chose England's national stadium as the venue to host the Champions League final in just over two years' time last month.

However, the May 28 date - which is a Saturday - clashes with the first day of the Football League's play-off weekend. That date would normally be the League Two final day, and as of next season Europe's premier football competition will be played on a Saturday.

It is understood Football League chiefs are demanding compensation if they have to move one of the play-off finals to an alternative venue.

Talks between Wembley and officials from the League are ongoing, but it now appears a distinct likelihood that the stadium will have to pay compensation for the breach of contract.

The League are one of Wembley's most important customers, and have a 100-match contract with the stadium. Their booking for the May Bank Holiday weekend extends over 20 years.

Football League One

Peterborough United 1 Carlisle United 0

Peterborough striker Aaron McLean spared The Posh's blushes for the second time in four days as Darren Ferguson's men recorded back-to-back League One victories.

The 25-year-old netted the only goal as Southend's next opponents held off the charge of Hereford on Saturday and came up trumps again pouncing on Chris Whelpdale's blocked shot and firing home in the 70th minute.

Peterborough feared the worse when defender Gabriel Zakuani went down holding his head in the 17th minute delaying play by ten minutes.

But it proved to have little affect on The Posh and after former Cardiff midfielder Graham Kavanagh came close for The Cumbrians McLean added the killer touch 20 minutes from time.

Cheltenham Town 1 Millwall 3

Reading loanee James Henry and Ashley Grimes' both netted as Millwall came from behind to record an all important victory in their charge for the play-offs against rock-bottom Cheltenham.

The Robins attacked Millwall from the off and should have gone ahead through Drissa Diallo in the tenth minute only for Lions keeper David Forde to parry the Milton Keynes loanee's shot away.

However the breakthrough did finally come in the 30th minute when a moment of madness saw Portsmouth loanee Richard Duffy spoon into his own net and gift Cheltenham the lead.

But it was all change after the restart and when Henry lashed home from the spot after Lee Ridley handled the ball in the 50th minute - substitute Grimes and midfielder Marc Laird finished the Robins.

Oldham Athletic 0 Bristol Rovers 2

Bristol Rovers duo Byron Athony and Darryl Duffy put Oldham to the sword as The Gas recorded their third victory this month.

Oldham had a perfect opportunity to take the lead in 29th minute when controversial striker Lee Hughes was brought down by Steve Phillips in the area - only to get up and watch the latter save the resultant penalty.

The Latics never recovered and fell behind through unfortunate circumstances after the restart when striker Duffy saw his cross-shot deflected over Jan Budtz in the 48th minute.

Welsh defender Athony sealed Oldham's fate 63rd minute latching on Richard Lambert's deflected shot and lashing home at the second time of asking.

Southend United 2 Scunthorpe United 0

Second half strikes from Theo Robinson and Alan McCormack saw Southend upset the League One applecart and send Scunthorpe crashing to back-to-back defeats.

The game did see striker Francis Laurent limping off with a hamstring injury, while Lee Barnard picked up his fifth booking of the season and will now serve a one match suspension.

Blues boss Steve Tilson spoke about the Blues continuing bad luck with injury: "That's the only downer on the evening. We don't know how bad Francis' injury is just yet but he's tweaked his hamstring and we're going to be missing Barney as well. It's unbelievable the way things have been going for us but we will have to battle on at Peterborough on Saturday and hopefully Dougie Freedman will be fit by then."

Colchester United 1 Stockport County 0

Colchester left-back Marc Tierney netted the only goal as The U's ended a run of three straight defeats against Stockport.

Colchester took the lead in the 17th minute when Tierney raced in and powered home Kemal Izzet's teasing cross.

It proved to be the winner and despite a barrage of Hatters pressure through Matty McNeil and Michael Raynes in the second half Colchester held strong to record their first clean sheet in three games.

Swindon Town 0 Hartlepool United 1

Defender Ben Clark's last-minute penalty ensured Hartlepool executed the perfect smash and grab raid against fellow strugglers Swindon.

The Robins started positively but did little to trouble Pools keeper Arran Lee-Barrett thanks to Kevin Amankwaah and Hal Robson-Kanu's tame efforts.

And just as a goalless draw seemed likely in the second half a moment of madness saw Jerel Ifil haul down striker David Foley in the area and Clark secure an unlikely win from the spot.

Crewe Alexandra 2 Yeovil Town 0

Yeovil keeper Josh Wagenaar's second-half howler gifted resurgent Crewe back-to-back victories as The Glovers continue to struggle under player-manager Terry Skiverton.

Crewe were clearly still buzzing from Saturday's win over Huddersfield but were lucky not to fall behind early on after defender Lee Peltier's long range effort shaved the crossbar.

However there was to be denying Clayton Donaldson on the stroke of half-time when the former Hibernian striker lashed home his second in as many games.

Crewe sealed the deal in the 79th minute when Glovers shot stopper Wagenaar somehow failed to deal with John Brayford's deep cross and fumbled into his own net.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Northampton Town 1

Brighton defender Tommy Elphick ensured life after boss Micky Adams remained unbeaten as The Seagulls stole a point in game that saw both teams end with ten men.

After a quite opening 40 minutes Ryan Gilligan fired the tie into life crashing The Cobblers in front after pouncing on a loose ball in the 44th minute.

However the lead was shortlived and defender Elphick drew Brighton level 11 minutes after restart powering home substitute Sebastien Carole's pin-point corner.

Tempers flared moments later and when Brighton front-man Adam Virgo and Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa seemed to raise fists referee Trevor Kettle sent both players off - leaving both to settle for a point at The Withdean.
