Slade: Eyes further improvement

Thanks Russell, now bugger off

League One rivals Brighton & Hove Albion have sacked manager Russell Slade after only eight months in charge.

The Seagulls boss was sent on his way following the 3-3 draw with Hartlepool United at Withdean on Saturday. Assistant manager Dean White and first-team coach Bob Booker heve also gone.

Martin Hinshelwood has been installed as caretaker manager, assisted by Steve Brown and Charlie Oatway.

Chairman Tony Bloom told the club's official site: "It is not a decision we have taken lightly and one taken with a heavy heart. Russell is a good man - which made it an even harder decision to take - but it is one which has been made in the club's best interests. Like all Albion fans, I am extremely grateful for Russell's achievements at the end of last season, as he kept us in League One against the odds."

Slade was given the task of saving the Sussex based club from what seemed certain relegation last March on a contract until the end of the season.

When he succeeded the former Yeovil manager was rewarded with a two-year deal. However, at the moment the Seagulls are just one place above the drop zone.

Slade said on his departure: "I am extremely sad that things have not worked out - but we have parted on good terms. I felt we were progressing through a much-needed and vital rebuilding process; that was never going to be easy with the large turnover of players during the close season."

So is the Southend boss Steve Tilson on the ambitious Bloom's shopping list?

If the Shrimpers go into administration Tilly could well lose his job al la Jim Gannon at Stockport, who'd done a great job for his club.

Brighton certainly have the dosh and no one could blame him for going if an offer was made.

However, early favourites for the Seagull hotseat are Steve Coppell and.......Dennis Wise!
