McGhee: Handed manager role

54-year-old Mark McGhee has been around having had spells in charge of English clubs Reading, Leicester, Wolves, Millwall and Brighton, however, he's been out of management since leaving Aberdeen in December 2010.

McGhee, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at the Memorial Stadium, takes charge of a Pirates side that is currently 18th in the table.

He succeeds Paul Buckle, who was sacked following a 2-0 defeat at Barnet at the start of the month.

A gamble by the board, Chairman Nick Riggs told www.bristolrovers.co.uk: "We are delighted to bring Mark at the club. We are very impressed with the quality of candidates for the position, but he was a cut above, he interviewed extremely well, and has a fantastic pedigree. Mark has a great track record, and has managed at the highest level and in Scotland. His approach is very proffessional and he impressed us with his plans to take Rovers forward and get the club up where it belongs. We are now looking forward to the rest of the season with Mark in charge."

Maybe they took a look at the success the veteran Scottish Blues boss Paul Sturrock has had at Roots Hall?

The Shrimpers travel to face Bristol Rovers on Saturday, March 24th.
