Gary Peters: 'I'll only be successful if Jamie and his team are successful'
Hereford United have named Gary Peters, who made his name as a defender between 1975 and 1990, as the club's new director of football.
He was unveiled in the role on Tuesday morning and, according to the club's official website, will 'take control of football from boardroom to bootroom'.
Never a club to hang around when danger lurks, they got rid of previous boss Simon Davey quickly enough when in a similar position last season, the Herefordshire team will be hoping Peters can sprinkle some magic on manager Jamie Pitman's efforts to build a competitive side, they were fairly poor when the Shrimpers beat them 1-0 on the opening day at Roots Hall, it should have been many more.
Peters played for Reading, Fulham, Wimbledon and Aldershot before moving into management with Preston, Exeter and finally Shrewsbury, whom he left in 2008, enjoying a total of 10 promotions as player, manager and coach.
The 57-year-old has been mentoring young Premier League players over recent years but will now oversee all things football at Edgar Street having penned a deal until the summer of 2014.
He insists that he is not there to take over from pitman if the Bulls poor start to the season continues, but we've all heard that before.
Peters, who will work alongside manager Jamie Pitman, told
www.herefordunited.co.uk:
"This is an exciting new challenge for me. Hereford is a great little club with a great past and to be given the chance to shape its future is something very special. One of my main tasks here is to help Jamie. I'll only be successful if Jamie and his team are successful but we've got a tough task ahead which is going to need lots of work and lots of support from the fans.
Pitman, whose Hereford side are second-bottom of League Two, added: "Gary has years and years of experience. He's been there and done it and knows the game inside out. He's just what we want. His knowledge and contacts in the game can only bring good to Hereford and I'm really looking forward to working with him."
Peters though has insisted though that the Bulls are the worst team in the league, they lost yet again at home on Saturday to Oxford United 1-0, but if they act now they still have a chance.
The former Shrewsbury manager has offered an honest assessment of the club's situation.
Peters said; "I think we have got to be scared, I think the team is probably the worst team in the division, I've not seen a team that I think is worse. I think that the club has recognised it as soon as this has given us a great chance. The fact that we are doing something straightaway allows us to get back in it early."
Odds on Pitman lasting to Christmas?
