Gary Johnson: From signing-on to being a Cobbler

Blimey, they didn't mess around.

After Northampton decided to relieve Ian Sampson of his managerial duties on Wednesday, only 48 hours later they've given the job to 55-year-old Gary Johnson, who left rivals Peterborough United in January, on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

The Northamptonshire side in 16th position in League Two at the moment, nine points off the play-off pace, and for once we've played them twice so don't have to face a new boss!

Cobblers Chairman David Cardoza told www.ntfc.co.uk: "I am delighted we have got our man. As soon as we parted with Ian Sampson, we identified Gary as our top target and we moved quickly to get him. It is a sign of our ambition that not only did we target Gary but that we have been able to appoint him as our new manager, He has all the attributes we are looking for - experience, a proven record, he has led sides to promotion at different levels in the Football League and he has a wealth of experience and contacts."

While Johnson himself came out with the usual guff.

He said: "This is the right club at the right time for me. I've taken clubs up at this level before and I am really looking forward to getting going. It has been done very quickly but the chairman has pushed the boat out to get me in and I appreciate that. It isn't necessarily the league you are in, it's the club you are at and this club matches my ambitions."
