Tranmere took the lead in impressive style when Antony Kay struck a fierce shot from the edge of the box after good work from Bas Savage.
Savage again turned provider for the second as his side continued to control proceedings.
He was felled by Chris Powell with nine minutes remaining and Steve Jennings slotted home from 12 yards to take Ronnie Moore's men to within two points of the play-offs.
