Farmers derailed by Crewe, Downing derailed by Cheltenham, Gasmen derailed by Fatboy

Cheltenham will announce their new manager on Monday morning, with Martin Allen tipped to succeed Keith Downing who parted company with the Gloucester side at the weekend.

Reports suggest former MK Dons and Leicester boss Allen, but best known to Shrimpers as the very loud guy on the touchline when we played Brentford, (4-1 Martin, 4-1), will take the job, with an announcement to be made at 10am.

Meanwhile, Downing is planning to take a short break before seeking a return to football following his departure from Whaddon Road.

He told the club's official website:

"I'm disappointed, of course, but looking back over the five years I've been here hopefully I've made a big contribution to the
football club and I've been proud to be associated with its development. I wish the club well and I will always have an affection for it because Cheltenham Town gave me a first opportunity to manage and we've enjoyed some good times over the last few years. I'm going to take a couple of weeks' break from football and then get back on it. I particularly enjoy the coaching side, but if there's a manager's job out there I'll apply and I'm looking forward to the next opportunity. I learned a lot under John Ward, but the last 10 months as manager have taught me a great deal and whatever I do next, it will prove great experience for me."

Oldham Athletic 2 Milton Keynes Dons 0

Lee Hughes and Mark Allott were on target as Oldham beat MK Dons to stay top of League One.

Hughes gave the Latics the perfect start on seven minutes when he latched on to Andy Liddell's pass and fired past Willy Gueret for his fourth of the season.

MK Dons had plenty of opportunities to level, but were unable to find a way past veteran keeper Mark Crossley.

And Allott sealed the win in injury time when he smashed in from 25 -yards.

Scunthorpe United 2 Carlisle United 1

Matthew Sparrow and Paul Hayes were on target as Scunthorpe recorded their fifth successive victory over high-flying Carlisle at Glanford Park.

The deadlock was broken on the hour mark when Sparrow headed in Martyn Woolford's cross from six yards.

And Woolford was again the provider as Scunthorpe doubled their lead on 73 minutes. Ben Williams could only parry the substitute's stinging long-range shot, and Hayes followed in to score from close range.

Carlisle pulled one back through Danny Carlton in the 77th minute but Scunthorpe held on for the win.

Swindon Town 1 Leeds United 3

Jermaine Beckford's double gave ten-man Leeds their second consecutive league win at the County Ground.

Leeds suffered an early blow when Irish defender Alan Sheehan was sent off for a professional foul in the ninth minute, but took the lead through Jermaine Beckford on 22 minutes.

Swindon levelled on the stroke of half-time when Simon Cox hit a sweet first-time shot past Leeds keeper David Lucas.

But Neil Kilkenny's long range free-kick proved too much for Robins keeper Phil Smith, and Beckford sealed the win for Leeds with his tenth of the season late on.

Leicester 0 Millwall 1

Gary Alexander scored the only goal to give Millwall victory ending Leicester's unbeaten start this term.

Millwall took the lead when Kandol flicked on and Alexander lifted his shot over the advancing Martin.

The home side had a strong shout for a penalty turned down when Millwall's Paul Robinson pulled Steve Howard's shirt inside the box.

Leicester's Paul Dickov saw a shot go wide before Kandol was sent off late on for a tackle on Michael Morrison.

Bristol Rovers 1 Walsall 3

Michael Ricketts hit a double as Walsall battled to victory over Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

The former England striker and Southend pie expert gave Walsall the lead in the tenth minute when he drilled home from close range after Rovers failed to deal with Marco Reich's corner.

And Walsall doubled their advantage when another Reich corner was headed in by Roberts.

Rovers pulled a goal back through defender Steve Elliott with 14 minutes remaining, but Ricketts' injury time penalty ensured Walsall came away with the three points.

Hartlepool 4 Cheltenham 1 (played on Friday September 12)

Hartlepool punished some slack Cheltenham defending to keep the Robins rooted to the bottom of the table.

Just before the mid-point of the first-half Hartlepool scored twice in three minutes thanks to James Brown's slick finish and an Andy Gallinagh own goal.

Just past the hour Robins keeper Shane Higgs was unable to hold a cross and Andy Monkhouse finished well.

Substitute Michael Mackay scored from a tight angle for the fourth, before Lloyd Owusu's header made it 4-1.

Huddersfield Town 1 Tranmere Rovers 2

Ryan Shotton scored a 48th minute winner as Tranmere came from behind to beat Huddersfield at the Galpharm Stadium.

Liam Dickinson put the Terriers in front on 15 minutes when he fired home left-footed from the edge of the area.

Edrissa Sonko equalised for Tranmere on 38 minutes when his low shot beat Town keeper Matthew Glennon.

And Tranmere were ahead three minutes after break, Shotton heading home Andy Taylor's cross from close range and that proved decisive.

Yeovil Town 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Joe Anyinsah had a debut to forget for Brighton as he was dismissed in a bad-tempered draw at Yeovil.

The loan signing from Preston received his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the 60th minute when he fouled Nathan Jones.

The ten men took the lead in the 76th minute when Nicky Forster scored from the spot after Andre McCollin handballed in the box.

But the lead lasted just four minutes, with Darren Way drilling a 25-yard shot past Michel Kuipers to earn Yeovil a point.

Leyton Orient 0 Stockport County 3

Jim McNulty and Tommy Rowe were on target as Stockport eased to a comfortable win over Leyton Orient.

Stockport were ahead after just 11 minutes when Rowe's cross was turned in to his own net by Brian Saah.

And on the stroke of half-time County doubled their lead when McNulty headed in Anthony Pilkington's right-footed free-kick.

Rowe put the result beyond all doubt when he slotted past Glenn Morris after being played through by Stephen Gleeson.

Northampton Town 1 Peterborough United 1

Colin Larkin struck just before half-time to earn Northampton a share of the spoils in a fiery derby at the Sixfields Stadium.

United were in front in the 15th minute when Craig Mackail-Smith set up George Boyd to lash home his third goal of the season.

But the Cobblers deservedly levelled two minutes before half-time when Larkin fired a low shot past Joe Lewis after being played through by Luke Guttridge.

Jason Crowe was sent off for a second booking in injury time, but Northampton held on for a point.

Crewe 2 Colchester United 0

Second-half goals from Michael O'Connor and Tom Pope earned struggling Crewe a welcome three points against Colchester.

After a disappointing first half, the game burst into life when O'Connor gave Crewe the lead within a minute of the restart.

The Irishman netted his third of the season from a free-kick, beating keeper Dean Gerken at his near post. Pope fired home from 12 yards to put the game beyond United and the U's dreadful day got worse when Steven Gillespie was sent off for a professional foul.
