Barnett: Crawley switch

Tyrone Barnett: Yet another signing for the League Two Red Devils

Crawley Town have signed striker Tyrone Barnett from League Two rivals Macclesfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

It is understood the Football League new boys have beaten Fat Fry's Peterborough United, back in the Championship, to the signing in a deal worth £150,000!

Barnett only joined the Silkmen last summer from the non-league ranks and is a very happy player, as is his bank manager.

Barnett told http://crawleytownfc.com/: "I am delighted to be joining such an ambitious club. The facilities on offer are fantastic for a player at this level and I cannot wait to get started. I enjoyed my time at Macclesfield but the time was right to move on and I have joined a good club. Steve Evans spoke to me in depth about what my role in the team would be but he made it clear I had to fight for my place."

The forward, who scored 13 goals for Macclesfield last season, has become the Reds sixth signing of the summer since Crawley won promotion to the Football League.

Town boss Steve Evans added: "Tyrone is a great signing for us. The lad had a brilliant season and we have watched and analysed him for around six months so you can say we know enough about him. He is magnificent in the air and has a great touch for such a big lad. Tyrone acknowledges and respects that he will have some serious competition for a place in the starting XI. However, that is the same for every player at Crawley Town. Tyrone gets all sorts of goals and that is the sign of a top-class striker at whatever level they play."

Not everybody's favourite side

So to update we will could be facing in mid-August; and remember they also pinched our former loanee Josh Simpson last season as well, where he's made 1 sub appearance in the Blue Square.

Teenage midfielder Hope Akpan has joined the money train following his release by Everton. Akpan, 19, came off the bench in the Europa League against FC BATE in 2009. He spent time on loan at Hull City in last season, making a couple of appearances for the Championship team.

On that one Evans said: "He had many offers from Football League clubs to consider but I have kept in regular touch with him. I watched him play several times last season for Everton reserves, indeed I tried to get him on loan at that time, but David Moyes said no to me and a few other interested managers.

Another where they just swept other clubs aside was in-demand Cheltenham Town striker Wes Thomas, again on a free transfer but we are talking wages here.

The 24-year-old was the Robins top scorer during 2010/11 with 19 goals and they obviously wanted him to stay and extend the one-year contract he signed last summer when signing from Dagenham & Redbridge.

Evans, short but sweet here:"Young Wes is a natural goalscorer and is a great signing."

I'm sure he is Steve, but Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker puts into words what many club supremos are fearing.

Baker told BBC Gloucestershire: "I've heard the package he's on and he wouldn't get that at a lot of clubs in League One, it's staggering. It shows the money someone is putting in at Crawley to sustain the wage bill. They're not doing it on gates. There's no way we could have kept Wes but we've learned our lessons. We should have had an option on his deal."

But let's end on another; Midfielder Scott Davies, 23, from Championship Reading.

Evans again:"Scott is a confidence player and loves to score a goal, which is great for a midfielder. I know he had a few options to further his career but he knows a few of the lads here and that helped. He is a dead ball specialist and we hope to take advantage of that."

Fat Fry, who must be worried as Posh seem to be Crawley's nusery side, has accepted offers for Chris Whelpdale and Charlie Lee, but he's more confident these two will not end up at the Broadfield Stadium after finishing loan spells at Gillingham.

Will the money eventually run out?
