Blues take advantage of Iron away day & The National to go seventh

Last updated : 05 April 2009 By Shrimpers24

Tranmere kick-off at 15.00 at home Sunday to Bristol Rovers and aim to regain 7th place from the Blues.

Tranny Manager Ronnie Moore will certainly make sure his boys are up for it. Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside he said: "The season starts on Sunday for us. If we win our game on Sunday we'll be a point from the play-offs - it's as simple as that. We know we're going to be in for a tough game. We've got to be at our best - if we're at our best we're good enough for anybody at this level - that's for sure."

Leicester City 2 Carlisle United 2

There was late drama at the Walkers Stadium as Carlisle striker Scott Dobie's injury time header cancelled out what looked to be an 88th minute winner from Leicester's Matty Fryatt.

Leicester controlled large parts of the first half, but fell behind on 31 minutes when Michael Bridges placed a low shot past Tony Warner.

The Foxes battled back after the break and Matt Oakley brought them level in the 52nd minute, driving into the top corner from deep inside the box.

Fryatt's 24th league goal of the season looked to have won it for Leicester but Dobie rescued a point for the visitors in the second minute of injury time with a header from Michael Liddle's cross.

Oldham Athletic 1 Peterborough United 2

Craig Mackail-Smith scored twice to take Peterborough within two points of leaders Leicester.

After a quiet start, the game burst into life on 25 minutes when Paul Coutts crossed for Mackail-Smith to net his 20th league goal of the season.

Oldham levelled just before half-time when Neal Eardley's free kick found Chris Taylor, who glanced a header past Joe Lewis.

The game looked to be heading for a draw, but Mackail-Smith scored from point blank range with four minutes left to give Peterborough a seventh straight league win.

Millwall 3 Walsall 1

Gary Alexander shrugged off a facial injury to score twice as Millwall returned to form at home and piled the pressure on the top two.

Loan striker Jason Price gave The Lions the lead from close range on 17 minutes, before Jabo Ibehre drew Wallsall level ten minutes later.

Millwall were back in front on the stroke of half-time as Alexander drilled home from 12 yards.

And Alexander, who was initially feared to be out for the season, found the net again on 53 minutes with a well-struck volley to seal the points.

Milton Keynes Dons 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 0

MK Dons stayed in the hunt for an automatic promotion place as goals from Ali Gerba and Jason Puncheon gave them a comfortable win over struggling Brighton at stadium:MK

The Dons went in front in the 29th minute when Ali Gerba latched on to Sam Baldock's pass and slotted past Michel Kuipers.

Ten minutes later Mark Wright crossed to the far post for Puncheon to head home the second, and Brighton never looked like getting back into the game.

The Seagulls are eight points from safety, and Russell Slade's men will need to win their two games in hand if they are to have any hopes of beating the drop.

Colchester United 0 Leeds United 1

Leeds ground out their fifth straight win thanks to Luciano Becchio's 13th goal of the season.

The Argentine striker fired Leeds in front from long range in the 29th minute, after good work from Ryan Snodgrass.

Colchester rarely troubled Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren and any hopes Paul Lambert's side had of claiming a play-off place now appear to be over.

The Yorkshire giants look to be the form team heading into the play-offs after finally shrugging off their woes on the road, and still have faint hopes of claiming an automatic promotion place.

Huddersfield Town 0 Southend United 1

Southend's late charge for the play-offs gained momentum as Lee Barnard's penalty earned them a priceless three points at The Galpharm Stadium.

The key moment of a disappointing game came in the 63rd minute when Huddersfield defender Tom Clarke was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

Barnard slammed in the resulting penalty to take his tally for the season to nine.

The Blues have now won seven of their last eight games, and moved to within three points of sixth-placed Scunthorpe, although the Iron have two games in hand.

Stockport County 0 Yeovil Town 0

Stockport's hopes of reaching the play-offs look to be over after they were held to a draw by Yeovil.

Despite beating Northampton in midweek, Yeovil failed to muster a single shot on target and were grateful to keeper Chris Weale for keeping them in the game.

But while Stockport enjoyed the lions' share of possession and forced ten corners, they were unable to find the net and Yeovil went home with a point which moves them one step further towards safety.

Cheltenham Town 0 Leyton Orient 1

Dean Morgan's first half goal gave Leyton Orient a vital win at Whaddon Road and kept Cheltenham rooted to the foot of the table.

The breakthrough came for Orient in the 25th minute when Scott McGleish teed up Dean Morgan to fire into the bottom corner.

Cheltenham had their chances to get back on level terms but a combination of wayward finishing and Jamie Jones in the Orient goal kept them at bay.

The result leaves Town 13 points from safety, while Orient have taken a giant step towards survival.

Hartlepool United 4 Hereford United 2

Joel Porter hit a first half double, but Hartlepool left it late to beat battling Hereford who are now 11 points from safety.

Porter's first came on nine minutes with a low shot from the edge of the area, but just two minutes later, Hereford were back on level terms when Febian Brandy netted.

Within two minutes Porter restored Hartlepool's advantage, firing home after being played in by Gary Liddle, before Hereford hit back again through Mark Pugh.

But with 13 minutes left Sam Collins headed the hosts back in front, and this time there was no way back for Hereford as Antony Sweeney wrapped up the points with another header.

Swindon Town 0 Crewe Alexandra 0

Both Swindon and Crewe are still looking nervously downwards as they drew a blank at the County Ground.

Crewe had the better of the chances and went close on several occasions, but found Phil Smith unbeatable in the Swindon goal as he produced fine saves to deny Clayton Donaldson and Tom Pope.

The visitors have failed to win in five games and are just two points clear of Northampton in 21st place, with the Cobblers having two games in hand.
