For an alternative journey keep up to date with SoL Travel at www.theshrimpers-online.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6&Itemid=8.

SoL may well do one of their 'mixed' transport offers, (train up, coach back), but no details yet.

If you can stay overnight there's a 9.15 coach from Hartlepool that gets back to London Victoria at 16.10 on the Saturday for £28.70.

TRAIN

If you haven't got tickets yet or at least a railcard of some sort, go by coach or stay overnight, see short breaks below.

Can only offer one way round the expense, and that will only get you up there, so try SoL anyway, I'm sure they'd help you out.

Kings Cross to Middlesbrough, changing at Darlington - 12.30 arrives 15.55 - £29.50. Book ticket at www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com to avoid extra costs.

Then get a £3.30 single Middlesbrough to Hartlepool - 16.32 arrives 17.03. So £32.80 to get you up there.

Back the next morning, the cheapest single is £47 and leaves at 15 minutes past the hour with a couple of changes before London. Again, check the national express website.

Er, the good news is that Hartlepool train station is a ten minute walk from the ground. Leave the station and go straight up a short approach road. At the end of the approach, turn right and head up Church Street towards the large church. At the end of this road is a bridge and junction with the A689. Go straight across the junction and the ground is in front of you on the left hand side of the road.

ROAD

Fill in the details from your home postcode to here for a full route plan www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp but for an edited version;

Approx. 276 miles, 5 hours, 14 minutes.

Get on the A1(M), leaving it at Junction 49, which merges onto the A168 (signposted Thirsk), which will become the A19. From the A19 take the A689 signposted Hartlepool. Follow the A689 towards the Town Centre. Follow Town Centre signs for 2.8 miles, over two roundabouts. Go straight over the next two sets of lights, passing Hartlepool College on your right. The next left takes you to the stadium. If you miss the turning, go past ASDA on your left, left at the next roundabout and then left at the next traffic lights for the ground. There is a fair sized car park at the ground. Otherwise there is plenty of street parking to be found behind the away end. (See map above)

FOOD AND DRINK

The Marina area, a few minutes walk from Victoria Park, has a number of rather sterile fast food outlets, restaurants and bars. Alternatively five minutes along Clarence Road will bring you to the town centre.

For the best choices for a decent pint go to the Pub Crawl in Hartlepool here: www.thelittlegazette.com/news/loadsngl.asp?cid=EDW8&id=420043

SHORT BREAKS

If you require hotel accommodation in the area then first try a hotel booking service provided by Football Hotels who are powered by Activehotels, who specialise in locating accommodation near or within a short travelling distance of the football ground. They also have the added advantage over some other hotel booking services that you pay on departure. To access their Hartlepool page click here.
