Southend suffer shock senior cup defeat

The holders of the Essex Senior Cup crashed out at their first defense of the trophy they won at the end of last season.

Though having most of the play in the first half Blues only took the lead five minutes from half time when James Walker volleyed home after being set up by Macca.

Some may have felt that would open the floodgates but it was Ryman Division One North side Redbridge who struck twice in four minutes early in the second half.

First, George Alder struck home in the 49th minute, then on 52 minutes Andre Humpreys said 'thanks very much' as he caught out a square Blues defense and placed the ball between the legs of Southend keeper Clark Masters.

The away side must have thought they'd done enough in normal time until Cory Ellis was adjudged to have fouled Rhys Henry in the box and James Walker stepped up to place the spot-kick wide of Jake Wincup in the Redbridge goal.

Macca had a last minute chance to win the game but blasted his shot wide when in front of goal.

Sadly for the holders of the trophy, extra time did bring a winning goal, in the 120th minute, but for Redbridge. From 10 yards out Harlee Dean composed himself well and placed the ball wide of Masters to put the team formerly known as Ford United into the fourth round.

Hopefully this will be the only shock cup result this week! No excuses though as this was a strong Southend reserve squad, well done Redbridge.

Southend United: Masters, Rieck (Owinja 65), Whittikar, Reynolds, Herd, Forshaw, McCormack, Grant, Scannell, Walker, Furlong (Henry 75).
