Shrimpers 'gutted' as the lights go out at Aldershot

With darkness decending on the EEB Stadium in Aldershot, two sets of floodlights not deciding if they wanted to work or not, and the club electrician called to the front office, it was obvious that the odds on this game reaching a conclusion were starting to shorten.

Blues boss Paul Sturrock has made three changes to his starting line-up which saw Ryan Hall drop to the bench with Anthony Grant returning to replace in midfield as the Shrimpers reverted to a 4-5-1 formation.

Shrimpers skipper Chris Barker again missed out with a calf problem and, with left-back Peter Gilbert suspended along woth Bilel Mohsni, that means Graham Coughlan made his first start since August at the heart of the back four.

That meant Luke Prosser switched to left back while finally defensive midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala coming back in for Neil Harris who drops to the bench allowing Mark Phillips will captain the side.

Luggy's natural instincts coming into play here, but to no avail, with the floodlights obviously causing problems throughout the first half, they were on, they went off, the game was finally called off at the break with the Shots one goal down and one man less!

Referee Gavin Ward usually cuts a controversial figure and it was no different here, it what was, to be honest, a horrible half anyway.

On seven minutes Ben Herd was adjudged to have handled in the box, which I have to admit I didn't see clearly, but that didn't bother Liam Dickinson who struck his spot-kick well enough to give the Essex boys the lead.

However, it looked as if the Shots would seen equalise when Michael Rankine rounded visiting keeper Luke Daniels, who appeared to collide with the striker, only for Rankine to be booked for diving, and to be honest the home side hardly appealed, a strange decision, not the only one by the diminutive match official.

Jermaine McGlashan was then handed the same punishment after 27 minutes, despite the veteran Coughlan seeming to clip the winger with an outstretched leg inside the box after the Aldershot man neatly cut in from the right past Luke Prosser!

With little else happening to the match official further pissed off the home crowd by sending off defender Darren Jones on 39 minutes for lashing out at Dickinson, who was subsequently booked but here Ward had no other choice.

Chaos then broke out after the break, with contradictory announcements over the restart after the lights failed, before the game was eventually called off and many of the faithful who had been caught in poor traffic, especially on the M25, had to go straight back to Essex!

One guy I spoke to had been at the game for 10 minutes!

Blues boss Paul Sturrock said after the game: "The players are all gutted about it. We just have to take it on the chin because we can't do anything else about it."

Scorer Liam Dickinson said: 'It's a bit of a farce. They will be more than pleased with it but it's down to a technical fault.'

Defender Mark Phillips: 'Absolutly gutted with that....we looked like our usual self again and was playing well for the win....cant believe it was called off....'

And Crawley lost 2-1!

And Gilbert and Mohsni will still be unavailable for the New Year's Eve trip to AFC Wimbledon.

You've got to try and be philosophical about a day like this!
