Referee: Keith Hill (Hertfordshire FA) 6 out of 10 – our ‘friend’ from Royston has certainly had worse games - there is no doubting that! However, it still took the flagging of his assistant to award United’s blatant penalty and even then he didn’t caution Dave Ridler.

Mark Bentley scored his second of the season
AND ANOTHER THING…

**Southend United recorded their fifth successive victory at Roots Hall in all competitions – the best run since 1990. Back then Blues won seven on the trot – Halifax Town (2-0) at the end of the 1989/90 campaign, then Aldershot Town (2-1) in the Rover Freight Trophy, Crewe Alexandra (3-2), Preston North End (3-2), ironically Shrewsbury Town (2-1), Swansea City (4-1) and AGC Bournemouth (2-1), all in the old Division Three. Twice United have gone seven matches unbeaten, with one draw disrupting the 1991/2 run and two draws interspersed in the 2000/1 trot.

**4-1 is the biggest home victory since the 4-0 drubbing of then Second Division Queens Park Rangers in this competition in January of this year – the Shrimpers defeated Rushden & Diamonds 4-1 in League Two in late September.

**Freddy Eastwood has now scored six goals in five games since joining Southend on loan from Grays Athletic, taking him past Adam Barrett on five. Wayne Gray joined the defender on that mark with his penalty, the second for the former Wimbledon forward of the campaign.

**Mark Bentley scored his second goal of the season, and his first in the LDV Vans Trophy for the Seasiders – he was Cup-tied last year after netting when Dagenham & Redbridge defeated Leyton Orient 4-1, but was sent off at Layer Road in the first round clash this season.

**This was, unsurprisingly, Nicky Nicolau’s first LDV match out of 17 in all. Andy Edwards made his first substitute appearance in the Associate Members Cup/Football League Trophy.

**Freddy Eastwood’s second goal was his fiftieth in all competitions for Grays Athletic (where he has netted 44 goals) and Southend United (the other six).
